She drives great but I have to get it through the nct so i'll hopefully get it up on a ramp next week and get the brother in law to have a good luck, send it in and see what it fails on, fingers crossed it wont cost too much to get through.

Would anyone reckon I have to change the front bumper indicator lenses to clear? and Im presuming i'll have to de-tint the front side windows

Re: My new MR2 MK1 9 Years, 2 Months ago Karma: 102
I don't see why you'd have to change the lenses?
The front window doesn't look that tinted, maybe you could ring your local Garda station and tell them you just bought the car and see if they'd test it for you if you brought it around, on the grounds that they're not going to charge you with anything if you do fail. The gards can be pretty reasonable some of the time.

Re: My new MR2 MK1 9 Years, 2 Months ago Karma: 148
I agree with Mark on both counts. Orange lenses are more common than clear ones so don't worry about that. Also, they are factory standard, you should never fear factory, only mods. The only thing you have to watch is this:

If you have clear lenses, you must have orange bulbs.
If you have orange lenses, you must have clear bulbs.

The reason for that, as silly as it seems, is that your indicators can either be too orange or not orange enough. I know, I know, but that's how it is. I know people who have failed on this and one of my old mechanics would always check my indicator bulbs when servicing my car just in case the orange had peeled off, as it does with the heat over time.

As for the windows, I am pretty sure with the new law that they are illegal now. I had to remove the tints from my front windows of the Jeep, even though I bought it like that and they had been on for years. It was perfectly legal two weeks before I bought the Jeep. Stupid laws!! The gaurds in Naas are pretty cool and they would deffo give you a good and fair opinion without any hasstle, but I am about 95% sure they will tell you to take it off.

It can be a really quick and easy thing to do, or a total bitch, depends on the quality of the film, how long it has been on and how much baking in the sun they have seen. Best to heat them with a hair dryer and try to peel off in as big a piece as you can. If it is ruined by UV, it will shred. If that is the case, heat anyway, spray with soapy water and use a scraping blade. Done carefully, you should still get most of it off easy enough. If there is any gum/glue left, a dab of petrol will wipe it right off, even a bit of WD40 will turn it into a gel that will come away easy.

I can give you hand if you decide to do it.

All of life’s problems can be solved with two things—duct tape and WD40. If it moves and it shouldn’t, you need duct tape. And if it doesn’t move and it should, you need WD40

Cheers Scooby,

@Quandry: I have no tax, not nct & no Insurance so will probably be a few weeks until I get all that sorted, I need the nct to get the insurance which is only €150, and nct is next friday so I should get a list of things to do then to get it through the 2nd time hopefully. and then i'll stick it through the nct again in the middle of september to get it to december 2012 etc

Yeh still in Germany Quandry...just catching up looking at the site, great pics from the Terenure show (caught a glimpse of your Recaros, looking good ). Cant see Daves youtube pics but will have a look on the other laptop later. Home for a few days in September, I'm still taxed and insured on the 2, so will see if there's anything going on when I'm back and hopefully catch up with you guys.
