Ive gone through many many sets of tires looking for the ones that feel the best to me and narrowed it down to two.

Bridgestone ultragrip - amazing tires in the wet, never had anything like them before.

Goodyear Eagle F1 - extremely grippy and pretty good in the wet also.

I currently have eagle F1's on my Glanza and on my girlfriends Celica and now that I need new tires on the MR2 that is what I will be putting on that.

Some people slate them but I cant fault them at all. I think they will be slightly higher in price than your budget but thought I would mention them anyway.

EDIT: only problem with the eagle f1's is they are soft and I am not sure how they will wear on the rear of the MR2... not very well is my suspicion.... but I can live with that.

I hear ya ran the back tires off mine in 2000kms... think they are toyo's that are on it and they were shite to be honest.

Maybe get a second set of wheels for when you're feeling frisky

I have Dunlop SP Max on the front and Kumho on the back. The Kumho grip very nicely! was interested in putting them on the front also but had difficulty finding the right size. I might land up switching to Dunlop on the back for that reason. The front seem reasonable enough for a street car anyways..

Will check and let you know. They're not the 'shopping trolley' range though so I don't think they're that cheap

I have Toyo T1Rs on mine done about 18k in them. Can't complain, only spinned it once in the wet when I was being a tit. Will replace them soon.

R888's rear. Eagle F1's Front. seems to be good. Bought the car that way, but dont hold out that the 888's will last too long. they are like hot sticky glue...lol

I have got about 7000-8000 miles out of my Toyo T1R's on the rear. They are a very good dry weather grippy tyre in my experience and not too bad in the wet either (although my car doesn't see many wet roads). Every tyre will give way at a point if pushed hard enough.

jamdoll wrote:

I would say the fact that the cars are rear wheel drive is the very reason for spending money on decent rear rubber. Skimp on tyres and the rest is immaterial. This is the very reason why Toyota put wider wheels and tyres on the rear of the MR2.

Generally, on other MR2 forums, the two most used tyres are Toyo T1R & Falken 452. In terms of quantities the Eagle etc are way behind. Not saying this means any are better or worse but plenty of people have tried different ones.

Go to mr2oc.co.uk and search the forums for tyres ..... hundreds of threads

I have vredestein ultracs on the front and i have no major complaints so far, have toyo r888's on the back and seeing as i don't need to use the car in the wet i might replace with them again.

All of life’s problems can be solved with two things—duct tape and WD40. If it moves and it shouldn’t, you need duct tape. And if it doesn’t move and it should, you need WD40

I ran the uniroyal rainsports and would say they are an excellent tire. They will get fairly eaten in the dry though, well mine did anyway.

Just a side thought from a newbie........BUT
Whats the average you can expect to get from a set of rear tyres, and mixed driving. Would you be lucky to see 10-12K/kms?
Normal tyres excluding trackday slicks (r888's & the likes)
Just trying to gauge how severe the mr2 will be on its driven rear wheels

Nice find. I presume the Falken 451 is a previous version of the 452. If so the Falkens look like the best value to quality/review. For a 245/40/17 they are 30% cheaper than Eagles.

I tried the Falkens, they were ok but did not compare to Bridgestone. I am currently on Goodyears.

I have the falken ze912 on the rear and for the money you cant go wrong.. Rear tyres on an mr2 wont last too long so imo they provide the best compromise. Will probably get them for the fronts too when they are required. Found them to have a good bit more tyre flex in them than the previous dunlops i had. It was a welcome addition to be honest as the suspension can be quite harsh on twos..

I'm a big fan if the Fuldas. Have a new set all round, majorly sticky on the road, even in the wet they hold well. Easily available, no need to order abroad.

I always used them on all my beemers. Very well priced too and last long, so a very good compound IMO.

The worst tyres I have ever tried are

- Michelin Pilot SX MXX3 (£200 each!) - made of glass

- Goodyear eagle F1 GSD3 - pathethic, made of glass.

- Toyo T1R - No grip at all even in dry conditions once on boost

The best tyres I have ever tried are

- Kumho Ecsta V70A - these are brilliant, better than R888 - but last 1500-2000 miles tops.

- Hankook RS2 - great all rounders.

I have only ever had Toyo T1R's on my car (1 set ) with no complaints what so ever. I don't drive much in the wet but dry performance is good IMO.

Falken 452's get a good response from most that fit them as well
