There will always be banter between the different MK owners. Different people want different things from (what definitely are) different cars.
The MK1 and 2 have strong similarities in terms of looks and performance, but he MK3 is a totally different car - less powerful, slower, soft top etc etc. So much so that Toyota changed the name of it in most countries in MRS (the double meaning of the abbreviation was perhaps a hint at the target market)
