Welcome to the site by the way. What are your plans? Think the most common one is the apexi ecu. It's getting on a bit ( like the 2 ) but it depends on what your looking to do? What bhp are you looking to run and do you want anti lagg?

Hi Spurs (good result last night for ya)

The standard Toyota ECU has a fixed map programmed into it. If you want to change the map for your car then you need to purchase an alternative that offers the flexibility. Apexi Power FC seems to be the favoured unit.

This is only really needed if you are looking to mod the car. I think the standard ECU 'learns' when small changes are made i.e. air filter, boost etc and adjusts accordingly.

You should post up what you have done or plan to do to the car and some of the 'modders' will give you some advice/direction. Also your location would be handy as there would be no sense me recommending someone near me if you live in e.g. Waterford

Yea 300 should be possible. Fit you Intercooler and up the boost Think it's only after 320 you need to forge it.

Yea an elecronic boost controler let's you control the boost from the drivers seat. The apexi ecu has a hand commander that has various functions andI let you up the boost if you have the rIght attatchment.

I don't think yu need an new ecu. You can buy a manual boost controler for about a tenner and do it.

Hi Spurs, welcome to the forum.

About six months ago I was in the same position as you. I wanted to start a bit of engine modding. As of now, I have spent over €5000 on the car. It's a bloody addictive game.

Here is what I have installed so far:

Cusco Coilovers
EBC grooved and drilled brake discs
EBC Yellow Stuff Brake pads
16" SSR light weight wheels
HKS Induction Kit
NGK 1 Stage colder Plugs
NGK uprated ignition leads
Uprated Bosch fuel pump
Greddy side mounted intercooler
Blitz Nur Spec R exhaust

I took the NCT last week and only failed on noise levels.

Here is what I have bought and not yet installed:

Apexi Boost Controller
Apexi Boost Gauge
Apexi RSM
Apexi Power FC and commander
Sard Fuel Pressure regulator
BS4 Bucket Seats
HKS SSQV Dump Valve

So basically you can do all this to your car and still pass the NCT!It's great fun trying to up your horses, but beware it isn't cheap.

It failed because of my anaconda exhaust. Lost the baffle.

I got most my bits from Nengun.com but if you visit the UK MR2 sites you will pick up some second hand bits. I got my ECU on IMOC.

I have already noticed a substantial difference in power but the boost controller and map will really make the difference.

Where are you based??

PowerFC is used by a lot of MR2 owners around the world and is proven.

You can pick up a second hand PFC for about 600 euros - keep an eye on IMOC etc

And you can get a solenoid to work with the PFC which will enable the PFC to control your boost. The official Apexi one costs about 200 euros but you can get a solenoid from FrightProps for only $40

However, don't up the boost without getting uprated cooling in place first. Top IC kits are ATS, Berk, Greddy - you can get eBay uprated IC kits and as far as I can tell, they seem to have decent cores - but be careful of the kit i.e. if the piping is good quality, clamps, welds etc I think Ricky may have bought an eBay one - so, maybe check with him re the quality

And also get an aftermarket boost gauge.

Why do you want to get it mapped ? do you find it slow ? As Spanky said - the stock ECU will learn and allow a certain amount of bolt-ons. So, maybe you might be happy with a bit extra boost and getting your car up to say 280fwhp. Have you done all the breathing mods already - downpipe/decat, exhaust, intake ? if not, get them done, get a MBC or EBC and ideally, get to a tuner to up the boost on a dyno. So, they will keep an eye on AFRs and make sure whatever level of boost you are raising it to, will be safe.

If you are staying with the stock ECU and doing the above mods, you can fit a FCD to sort fuel-cut. Again, if you are raising the fuel cut, i'd recommend getting the boost raised by a tuner on a dyno.

Anyone can learn to tune , but if you want longevity you best bring it to a reputable tuner. Ive mixed experiences with Irish tuners. Some I find to be Excellent and some a bit reckless with other peoples property and just out for impressive high figures!. You will know who i'm talking about if you ever see the following (one tuner in particular who likes to bounce the car off its limiter at the end of a dyno run) Also drilled a hole in the exhaust system of my mates R34 skyline without permission.

300 w/bhp is not much good to you if it only lasts two-three weeks.

approx 15 percent up on standard should be achievable without too many hassles, and on relatively cheap breathing/cooling mods. After that you can more or less shoot for the skies if your wallet will allow!
Hks Fcon might be another option for management. It Should work out cheaper than power fc.I had the power fc and commander for my gtir (PLug and play set-up) and found it very good. they are a kings ransom to buy for a Pulsar though.
also
Autronic, Motec, Ems, Link and many other options although not plug and play

Turbo tuning is fun and fairly easy for mild to medium gains. I have to say I love NA tuning too. Harder, and more of an involving challenge. (obviously for less gains...lol)

Good luck with your project!

I take my business to Westard Engineering. Martin Tracey. He knows his stuff and knows the Power FC inside out! He's based in Enfield, Co Meath.
He will chat away to you, and unlike some other tuners I've experienced will not snub you when you ask for advise. Full machine shop and 2 and 4wd rolling road. (not dyno-pack hub dyno)
At the end of the day its up to you.
