Was on dx.com looking for an obd2 cable and accidentally came across an mr2 adaptor plug for the obd 2 and decided to buy it aswel to try since it was cheap.

It works on my 01 celica with obd2 but it wont work using the adapter on the mr2.

Anyone ever try this before? Will it work at all?
Or do i need a special type of software to connect to the mr2 ECU?

You just bridge the te1 and e1 pins on the diag port with some wire and read mr2 codes off the engine management light on dash

Yes i know that but its not the codes i want, i want the readings from all the sensors on a laptop screen like the temperature sensors, oil pressure, lambda sensor, rpm, speedo, etc...

The software doesn't exist. The sensor outputs cannot be read from the diag port.

You can do most of that with gauges I've no doubt you could buy electronic ones that are designed to run on a carputer

Why would that obd adaptor even exist if it dosent work?
Toyota must have had some sort of software when they were making the car to hook it up to a computer when it was still on the production line to adjust the ECU or check if the car is operating properly...
Im sure it wasnt designed to be used with just a paper clip...
Im sure they would have attached a peperclip or wire to the underside of the diagnostics cap like they attached the plastic clip for pulling out the fuses in the engine bay fusebox lid

In all my time of reading through mr2 forums (all of them) I've never seen anyone say they have used any kind of diagnostics software for the mk2 Spla. The only method I've seen mentioned time and time again is the paper clip method. I believe the port is only there to give you readings from the dash, external readings came on the later models like celicas etc.

My 95 uses the paper clip method, the 98 has a proper OBD II connection in the car on the drivers side that this can probably be hooked up to and see some readings.

Toyota have highly specialised readers and software that were used in the 90's to read the information you are talking about SPLA. These were never on sale to the general public.

Would it be just the wiring or is the ECU different aswel to allow the obd2 to function?
I might just get wiring from a 98+ if its just wiring...

Not worth going down that road, if you want to see loads of readings get the Apex'i ECU

The wiring from the Beams won't work in you 3SGTE and I am not sure if the later MR2 turbos had the OBD II port in them.

That ECU is too expensive.
Ill try find out if the 98+ 3sgte cars have the OBD2,
If they do ill try find a 98+ mr2 for braking.

I just wanted to see my air fuel ratio, instead of buying the afr kit for 200-300euro i thought id spend about the same on some wiring and software instead, so that i can then connect to the pc and see the afr as well as other engine sensors.

I have not done it on mine, but seen it working on a Starlet after making a lead up.

Edit: nevermind I got the pics to open. Yeah I should be able to do this I'm not seeing the afr gauge in the pic, does it show afr readings?

No point in looking at AFRs without a wideband sensor, I have seen the 2 working side by side.

The Mr2 Ecu isn't OBDI or OBDII compliant. Toyota used their own version known as TCCS iirc, and slipsliderg is correct, Toyota even had their own diagnostic testing equipment.

I know of two people with the said tester, and both of them paid a lot of money for it. Although, for what you want, it would be useless.

The Mr2 uses a narrow band o2 sensor, so even if you could read afr's, the information would be useless - much like fitting a narrow band afr gauge. To read proper afr's, you will have to buy a proper wide band kit

The adaptor you have is useless, despite it actually plugging in, it will not give you the information you require. If it worked, we'd all have done it ages ago

Well i have the wideband sensor just need the other bits now to make it work, im not sure what control box and gauge i need...

I Have the whole setup here ... Yes those adaptors work however it all comes down to the ECU and the software you are using to read it with ...

To read the Toyota data stream, you first need a new enough MR2. In the US that is the 93+ gen2. Then you need a Techtom MDM-100, and lastly you will need something to soothe your disappointment after you spent all that money and realize the data rate is very slow and really not very useful anyway.

The knock output for example is just a YES or NO, and again the data output rate is too slow to use for any kind of tuning. You may get 10 samples of RPM in an entire dyno pull.

I have to agree with this, I had the Toyota diagnostic equipment connected to my Starlet once reading real time, and it was very slow and only updated about once every 1.5 seconds. Pretty useless actually.

I have a Techedge wideband unit, with it you get software to connect to your engine and you can read lots of engine info on that, quickly and accurately. If you like a bit of DIY then the kit is worth buying,only advice I would give is to buy a good lead for converting the serial port to a USB connection.
