my mr2 project............. 10 Years, 11 Months ago

so ive missed my last 2 so much ive been looking for a new one, looked at a few and wasnt happy with them, rust on uk cars, damage repaired on others etc, i wanted a good clean solid shell with no rust/previous damage, didnt mind what else was wrong.
So found this one, 93 gts tbar, genuine 117km, really original car. It had a few problems-leaking power steering rack, wheels had to go, alternator not charging etc...but it was so straight i bought it.
only 1 prob with it.....i wanted a red mr2....... so i started stripping, everything had to go to do a colour change properly, so it will be red everywhere, even underneath, so bout 14 hours later im down to the bare shell and ready for prep work for primer!

Best of luck with the project mate. Did you do any more research on popping in a diesel after?!

bit of an update on this, got the mounts all sorted today, little bit more welding for brackets for fusebox and liftpump etc to be done and then out to the spray shop....
D4D engine in place, has to come back out 2moro as its getting a bare shell respray, just wanted to get all cutting/welding done before the paint job. think its a worlds first mr2 diesel!

You should really throw up a build thread on www.twobrutal.co.uk they will love this conversion.

That looks like a snug fit MJ. What way did the gearbox match up? Na or turbo running gear?

it will be snug looking when everything goes back in around the engine bay, really looking forward to getting it painted and putting the engine back in for good, and getting down to the fun part-wiring!
The ratios are all wrong in the mr2 box, ud be always up in high revs to get it to move and these engines dont really rev over 4k, power is from 1500 to 3500 revs so its using the avensis gearbox, mounting brackets needed to be modified to fit but its almost identical box to look at and the selectors are reverseable so will use the mr2 selector mechanism. Was to hard/expensive to find a sr180 engine, so i settled on this 148bhp lump, was running sweetly and computer says its doing 54.8mpg.
Im told i can get an extra 30% bhp and torque and more economy with a remap so will definately be going with that.
Ill keep the pics coming

got this back from painting the other day, after talking with the sprayer we decided to just spray the inside at the moment, and rebuild everything then spray the outside so i wont scratch the paint while working on it, did a real nice job spraying the hidden bits. really cant get over how clean the shell is, no rust/damage at all

After seeing the car last week I can't wait to see the level of finish you get on this one. Throw up some before and afters on the bolt reconditioning and details of where you get it done as I am sure plenty of people would be interested myself included.
Best of luck with the build looking forward to a spin in it.

got the shultzing done so i can start putting stuff back on
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
got started on the wiring
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
then was looking at the diesel engine and see that it had no accelerator cable on the throttle body so went out to the avensis and see it has an electric pedal-no cable
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
thats not good news! even if i fitted a different throttle body to accept a cable, the ecu wudnt allow it as it controls the revs so im gonna have wire the electronic accelerator pedal into the car, this is definatly gonna be the first sw20 with an electronic accelerator!

MJ, I have a cubby box for behind the drivers seat, also have two lids. They need a bit of elbow grease but nothing mental and one has 2 nearly unnoticable holes in it.
Will try and post up photos soon if you still need one.

little update.....
Progress has been slower than expected due to the amount of problems, everything is different and needs modification and re-working, wiring has been a huge issue, but thankfully im on the home stretch on the wiring front!
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
Had to send away the gearbox and have a custom casing using mr2 bellhousing and avensis gears/internals to allow the selectors to be on the right side(front of box), had the box reconditioned while i was at it, and got it back this morning, so fitted a new clutch, replaced the troublesome dual mass flywheel with a solid one, fitted a timing belt kit, and lifted the engine up into place! its all plug and play with my modified loom, so will hopefully try start it 2moro and see what happens!

Nice work MJ Kc'd
On the dual mass flywheel, will the engine not have alot more vibration in it without it and this may lead to looms and pipes possibly having a shorter life and well as the added vibration.
Not something I have done before so asking as well as advising I suppose.

No the dual mass was solely to engage the gears smoother, but they are troublesome and even toyota themselves are selling solid flywheel replacement kits for the avensis.
I had a rav4 d4d and was towing alot and done in the flywheel and i replaced it with a solid one and it drove the very same, no extra vibration, and strangely it engaged gears with the same smoothness. u need to replace the clutch with the flywheel thou as a dualmass clutch wont fit a solid flywheel.
On the vibration front, engine mounts may be an issue, petrol mounts are more solid as there is less vibration tru the engine, diesel mounts are a bit "softer" rubber to absorb most of the vibration but it'll be a bridge ill cross when i get der! Didnt get to try start it today as i was making brackets for airbox/fusebox/loom etc,and gonna try pipe the intercooler 2moro. Wud be alot easier if the intercooler was on the passenger side!
