Retro fitting aero wiper arms to SW20 11 Years, 11 Months ago Karma: 141
First I will get it out of the way. I am not looking for the blades that have an adapter to fit the hook system on the SW20.

My 1993 MR2 wiper arms have become slightly pitted with rust and so I started thinking about changing them for the "new" wipers on today's modern cars.

I have only started thinking about this a few days ago, so I have not yet done any real world investigations on the matter.

Are there any modern wiper arms that use the flat/aero type wiper blades on other vehicles that would fit our SW20 ? They don't have to be from a Toyota so long as they wipe the windscreen on the same arc as the originals and fit the original spindles.

Apparently the aero/flat wipers clean the windscreen better than the old style blades, but I have read that the aero/flat blade adapter wipers do not sit aesthetically correct and can look awkward on some vehicles. Which is why I am looking for wiper arms that are designed to use the standard aero/flat wiper blades.

So if you know of a vehicle that may have suitable aero/flat wiper arms, please let me know here.

I haven't tried it personally to see if it would fit but MK2+ focus arms would be worth a try me thinks.

Yea that hasn't worked. Do a search for mr2 wiper on eBay and you shall see some. Not sure on the quality I'll be replacing mine with some over the next month.

I have the aero wipers on my Civic. The main difference between them and my MR2 wipers is the size of the arm i.e. the Civic arm is much fatter. I dont know if this is typical of wiper arms that take aero blades or not but if it is then it would look wierd on the 2.

Using both types, I can say that there is no noticeable difference in quality (Bosch on both from memory), so I would suggest the change is purely a cosmetic one.

The half way house is the standard fitment aero blade you can get from Halfords but I think you get better performance from a blade with spoiler.

Keep us posted on your progress 'cause I would assume the size of the arm isn't dictated by the type of wiper blade. Would be interesting to see what the conversion looks like.

Alos, try the other forums ... someone is bound to have done it.

The VW guys seem to think the aero/flat wipers make a difference. The aero arms for the Golf look skinny.

I thought the aero would be a improvement on the standard type fitted to our cars. I don't want the MR2 to look weird, that's why I wasn't keen on getting the aero/flat wipers that have the adapters. I suppose I should have asked if anybody has the Bosch twin aero wiper blades fitted to their standard wiper arms, to see how they looked.

If there is no significant improvement of the aero/flat wiper cleaning the windscreen, then I may as well buy some new standard wiper arms.

But I will keep looking on other forums for a while.

Harper are you talking about the aero/flat blades with adapters, they are the only blades that I can see ?

I had a mk2 focus and the flat blades on that definitly cleaned the windows much better than the regular type of blade on my MR2, though personally I feel this is more down to the wiper arm mechanism installed in the 2, its not the most powerful one i've come across.
You could probably modify any of the flat blade mechanisms to fit on a 2 if you were handy enough.

boo hoo Harps

My standard MR2 blades were pretty crap when I got the car, juddering at speed etc. Tried the spoiler blades and noticed a big improvement, and the clearance is as good as the daily driver .... or if there is a difference it's minimal.

I thought the big arms might have been a Honda thing

Strange, I was only thinking about doing this myself the other day! I have the Tesco flat wiper blades on mine, but I think they may have changed rubber or manufacturer because they are cack now, used to be incredible, and were only 4 euro each!!!!

But yeah, actual OEM flat wiper arms that fit an SW20 would be awesome. And if they have a similar nut and bolt attachment like our own cars, might not be too difficult to rig something up. I'll definitely have a look about

Or you could just buy a set of Bosch Aerotwin blades that fit the mr2 just fine, i've been using them for the last couple of years.

What size are you using?

I always have increased the size of wipers on all my cars, but on the MR2 when i did it, i found the drivers wiper got jumpy, seemed like the arm wasn't strong enough to hold the blade to the windscreen even when stopped..

I have the ebay blades similar to the ones above and they are great when doing 70mph, they dont lift.

I was thinking of doing this too. I didn't realise that the standard wiper arms might not be compatible? The flat blades are definately better though.

The trick, to doing the full conversion, would be to get a replacement arms that is the same length and same spindle size (correct term??) from a more modern car.

With the correct details and a bit of surfing about or calling in at garages you might get a close enough match.

I don't know why but I think you might have more chance with Jap suppliers so I would start with Mr T or a generic supplier like Euro Car Parts
