"3sgte oil filter is stuck and will not turn" - that is what I was fiercly googling yesterday. I was conducting a routine oil change and found that my oil filter was stuck solid and no amount of heaving on the filter would loosen it off

I had a dig through my tool set and found an oil filter wrench, however the combination of my intercooler piping and O2 sensor would not allow me to get enough purchase on the filter. My next stop was to remove said piping and sensor and that is when I found a web page (Australian GT4 forum I think?) where someone else had the same issue.

One of the recommendations was to drive a screwdriver through the side of the oil filter and turn that, however where the oil filter sits on the gen2 3sgte makes this almost impossible. Someone else suggested using a three prong oil filter tool which I hadn't seen before, however I was able to find one at Halfords (yay!):

Opening up the box and it's clear to see how this tool works, there are gears on the three pins which actuate them together:

They are driven by a socket - 1/2inch or 3/8 as you require:

I used the screwdriver method myself ... I found it tight to get much movement on it but it worked ... A little messy however ..

Looking at my new filter and it's looking promising:

So out to the car and I assembled the remover tool with an extension bar and 3/8 ratchet:

Then simply slide in to place on top of the stuck oil filter:

Tension a little by hand to get the prongs started on their inward route, and then loosen with the ratchet and hey presto!:

In under one minute this tool was able to loosen off the filter which I had been struggling with for hours! The only downside is that it's 25euro which for one oil change is a little expensive, however given that this tool can be used over and over again for many years to come, and also that it fits many different sizes of oil filter then I think this was a good investment :)

So there you go, if you have a stuck oil filter on a 3sgte or any other engine where the oil filter is hard to get ahold of then give this approach a try.

I have one of them tools they are a great job.

2 questions. Where did you get the oil filter and where do you dispose of the waste oil?

Oil filter can be got from Fensport and I leave my oil in the local recycling centre.

Yeah it's weird, sometimes they are just wedged on there and will not come off. Practically broke my hand trying to loosen it

I found cheaper ones on ebay also but I needed one in a rush and Halfords was only around the corner from me.

Another good thing for Halfords is the 'free replacement for life' on their advanced range. Still it was a touch expensive.

I know how you felt. The rev 2 filter is an absolute bastard to get off. There have been times when I would literally have paid any sum of money to get it off! Make sure you keep the receipt or they won't honour that

have one of those actually i've a combination of different oil filter removal tools -

for the NA at least I found the cup wrench the handiest to shift a stiff oil filter - it fits the filter exactly and doesn't slip and attaches to a ratchet same as yours
