This is my story with my 2 its a 1998 with a revison 2 engine

Bought 2 yrs ago in uk about 100 miles after buying oil starts flowing out of the bov and i mean flowing about a litre every hour of driving also temp gauage rises due to low oil.

So take it to garage told bad compression in chamber three of the engine and there was a slight bit of oil on the spark plug in same chamber all due to overboost.

So take back to guy i bought it off he strips engine does full rebuild top and bottom new head as far as i remember uprated actuator new piston rods new gaskets car now running fine so got it resprayed and a few other things done with it.

Now about 1500 miles later turbo blows so turbo out the intercooler full of oil secondhand turbo put in intercooler cleaned car put back together but car not boosting properly and if parked for a few days serious amounts of white smoke when starting from cold u wouldnt be able too see out the back window with the smoke after about 500 miles of driving over a few weeks this problem seems to come and go some days on start up no smoke other days loads of smoke and car now lacking power wont pass 60mph so back again to garage boost pipes may have been set up worng i was told changed them around still no difference then told shaft broke inside in turbo so another second hand turbo fitted now car not been driven since well about 5 miles to test whats happening now is well i been told is car boosting fine but after u run car or leave on idle for a few minutes oil starts to appear in chamber three soiling the spark plug causing the smoke so clean out chamber spark plug etc and it keeps happening over and over again and was told that what was the cause of the turbo shaft to break.

so now what should i do now apart from obvious get a new mechanic and how much more will it take to get the car right of am i as well off just to replace the engine its been my first turbo so not too used to them as always had an n/a 2.

would be greatful for all suggestions phoned ivi engines and they want 1500 and will give a 3 month gaurantee to replace the engine with one of theirs.

Welcome to the board and sorry to hear you've had so much trouble with your 2. Why does it have a RevII engine if it's a '98?

If it were me and I was going to swap the whole engine I would import a rear clip and put a GenIII back in it. Ultimately they're a better engine.

I can recommend you to a guy who's going to do my engine swap if you like. He's straight up and won't mess you around, although he's in Dublin so it depends where you're located?

The other thing is that he doesn't build engines, but he could probably swap a clip no problem.

Does your guy supply engines as well i am located in galway but no probs getting it transported to dublin

Clip = half cut. They cut the back off an MR2 in Japan and then ship them overseas to willing buyers. It's pretty big in the USA where they have a gazillion na's that people want to convert to turbo.

Seeing as you're in Galway, you should call Joe the MR2 dismantler. I was only talking to him today on 087 326 0386. Tell him you're with the MR2 club and you need a 3sgte, sounds like he has a few MR2's over there and who know's maybe he has a friendly mechanic or workbay near by.

Alternatively, I will be pulling my RevII in a few weeks (allegedly) so if you want to wait it could be another option for you.

If you're looking for a whole new engine, I would suggest talking to Tim@TBDev (link at the top of the forum) or Scott@ATS (he's on this board). They will be more money than IVI, but you're going to get something that is built with passion, by an MR2 specialist. In my book this is worth the extra stretch, but depends on your budget.

hi Quandry i havent done anything with it yet its still parked as i have been in uk for last few weeks and car is in ireland so was in no rush with it but still thinking along the lines of ivi as at least i will have a 3 month gaurantee with it

I will have a running revII 3sgte for sale in a few weeks if you're interested in a cheaper option.

There's also Steven from Momentum motorsport joined up here recently. They have a lot of MR2 / 3sgte experience.

well think we narrowed this down to valve stem oil seals playing up so not a hard job to fix.

quandry how much would you be looking for the engine and do u know anyone in ireland that would fit it for me

tim thanks so much for all your help it s hard to find guys like u that are so devoted and will spend time on the forums offering advice that run there won business but yet no pressures to actually buy anything or get work done from u belive me u are far and few between

tim the to fix the seals is maybe not a big job but yet it costs a good bit and me i know very little about mechanics etc but way i see it by the time i fix the prob that my engine has i would be as cheap if not cheaper to replace the engine but i suppose it depends on what you are working on for me i dont know how strong or how good my engine is i could fix and it could all falter a few weeks later and i would be back at square one where as if i went down the ivi route i would have 3 months guarantee and surely i would have an idea after that how engine would be thats my thinking so am i right or wrong thinking like that ?

Hi Vinny, it won't be out of the car for another 3-4 weeks unfortunately, but I can tell you then if you like. It has a minor leak from the main seal, there might be other things too, but we'll know when it comes out, and what it will take to fix it. Running like a champ - it's going on the dyno tomorrow morning!

I have a mechanic who know's MR2's in Clondalkin (Dublin) he's swapping my engine for me when the new one gets here. If you needed an engine fitted he would do a good job, but it might be a bit of a hike from the west coast for you is the only prob.

Well my engine put out 304hp and the dyno guys were impressed!

They told me I should not bother getting a new engine, but it has that minor leak (a drip every now and then) from the main seal, and I already paid for the new one so it's definitely coming out.

The engine had a new timing belt and a HKS 1.4mm headgasket fitted a couple of years back so it would be a case of change the seal and put it straight in and off you go. I'm pretty sure IVI are just imported engines, not rebuilt? unfortunately you don't see any history with those.

Anyway, if you're interested in mine, I'll be asking 900 Eur selling separated from the turbo. Can organise a demo ride, if you're interested.

i wont need the turbo as have my own and also a lot of other parts like bov etc but will you find out from your mechanic a price to refit the engine in my car and i dont know will it make much of a diff but i wont be taking the old engine away

Ok no worries. I am hoping that he will be dropping mine in the 3rd week of October, this depends on shipping of my new engine so I will keep you posted.
