Good day to you all! 1 Year, 5 Months ago

Hi all,
My name is Dylan and I thought I would open an introduction thread and say hello.
I have had a few Toyota's and currently have a Glanza V which has been used as a weekend toy for a few years.
Unfortunately the Glanza doesnt see much use these days and I have decided to take it off the road completely and turn it in to a track car to keep me occupied. I wont get time to do any work on it for maybe 12 months or so and plan on putting the little lady to bed for a while until I have more time to dedicate to her.
In the meantime I need a new toy and that is why I am here. I was looking at Supra's and RX7's and never really considered an MR2 at all I have to be honest. Having done some research I see just how under-rated they actually are. I would very much see myself as a car fanatic and even I never paid much attention to MR2's?!?
Anyway... what is really attracting me to an MR2 is the stories of handling. Some people seem to call them widow makers and others say "you need to know how to drive them". I have been in America for 3 years now and have been driving all manner of RWD machines, currently I am in a dodge challenger. These cars get very bad press, like most yank metal, but I have realised that they can be great fun if you learn how to drive them. They are not tight, they are not smooth... there are a lot of things they are not but they are fun!
So this brings me back to the MR2. It may not be a drifters car... though I have seen people drift them, it may not be a Supra, though I have seen them chew up supra's, it may not be an RX7, though I have seen some that look nicer than some RX7's.... it is a very unique machine indeed. How many mid engined, turbo'd and affordable cars are out there? not that many. I am seriously looking forward to getting behind the wheel and having some fun in one. It shall be my Glanza's big brother.
My girlfriend has a 7th generation celica and loves it, I do too... they are also very under-rated and handle so well for a fwd car! She has always liked MR2's herself so it should entertain her also.
Anyway, I hope to have one soon and once I get one I will let you all know and ask for advice should I need it.
Thanks for the forum, its always good to find a dedicated place for such things and we all too often take forums for granted these days
VRRRROooooooOOOOOOOoooMmmmmmmm

One of the best intros I have ever seen. Welcome aboard. Great to see such a car and more specifically a Toyota fan. Seems yourself and Dan are bringing a lot to this forum, in terms of both passion, knowledge and experience. Glad you have finally noticed the 2 and are looking to get in to one, the more the merrier!
I cant believe you have a Challenger!!! U JAMMY GIT! I love American muscle and my fav, the one I want as a toy someday, when I have the money and the space, is a Challenger!
You gotta stick up some pics of that thing!
BTW, you would be surprised how driftable 2's are, like a lot of JDM Toyota's, things you would never expect, like Crowns and stuff, they are just the the choice drifter car. That place belongs to the Nissan stable, Skyline's and 200SX's etc....
There is a thread somewhere on here with vids of MR2 drift action. Ill have a look and stick it up for your entertainment.
Looking forward to meeting yourself and Dan at the this combo MR2 and Starlet meet.

Ok, here it is, MR2 drift action:
www.mr2.ie/index.php/mr2-forum/26-time-a...17131-oh-dear-skatey
BTW, gave you your first KC+1 for the intro. That's a karma click. You can give one to someone for doing something good or funny, or contributing something, maybe even if someone helped you out with something.
Just to the left of a users avatar is their karma, you can add one with the green thumb or take one away with the red, but we dont really do that here!
You can only give one every six hours.

What a friendly welcome!
Thanks everyone, I like it here already.
Dan and I know each other from the toyotagtturbo.com forum, I am sure he would agree it is a great place (I would say that as I own it ). This place has the same kind of friendly feeling to it, I steer clear of a lot of forums as they are all about who can be the biggest keyboard warrior or slag off other peoples cars - its very childish and boring. At the end of the day we all like what we like and discussion is healthy, or should be.
@SWAGGER - dont get too excited it is the new challenger not the classic one... and it is the V6 not the V8 Damn rental companies only ever offer the base models but it does go sideways pretty easily if you have the nerve to try! I have to say there is something about American cars that has grown on me, I used to hate them. Now I appreciate them for what they are.... feckin dangerous!!! lol. I was at a muscle car show a couple of weeks ago, I will put up some pics on here, some will love them some will hate them
Thanks for the KC! I was reading the forum recently and saw some references to KC+1 and was like "are these lads on drugs or in a cult or what?"

Didn't know you owned that site, nice one!
Yep, all the gang on here are sound. On average, its generally an older crowd, prob average age of about 30 or so. There is a bit of slagging and banter, but it's all fairly good natured and harmless.
Believe it or not, I quite like the new breed of muscle cars, NEARLY as much as the old ones. The new Challenger, Mustang and even the Camaro are pretty true to the old ones in terms of the style and bad ass presence etc, yet look modern and up to date at the same time. All good!
I was in the States for a couple of weeks for work, about 2 years back. Had a rental Chevy Monte Carlo. Nothing special at all as American cars go, but very different and interesting in comparison to all our local stuff. I thought it was nice and good fun, a two door coupe the size of an S Class Merc!! Typical HUGE American stuff ya know? Was an auto, V6, a bit of a dog, but I loved the noise and pure rawness of it. It's like driving a boat, just floor it and keep it straight....ish

I just turned 30 this year myself... my haircuts seem to be taking shorter amounts of time to complete... either the barber is getting quicker or there is less for him to do...
Its funny you should say that about the new muscle cars, the challenger in particular never gets old looking at it. It is very very true to its heritage. The lines on it are lovely. Those monte carlo's are mad things. They look like nascars for the road, absolute redneck machines! I always imagine the owners running moonshine at night in the back of them yeeehaww
@Quandry - thanks for the welcome, I hope I do too. My brother is supposed to be going to check out Thurlock's car this week. Looking forward to hearing his report on it.

Welcome along Dylan
I see swagger has already been stalking and pestering you. You will get well used to this, just dont get him started on carbon fibre
You may have said already, but where in the states are you from???
I am also a bit of a closet American muscle. The modern camero, mustang and charger are pretty cool looking in a totally mean way. My mate also has a '68 mustang with the 302 (I think) V8 with new Edelbrock carbs etc just fitted. Not overly quick but sounds amazin'

Will dig out some pics of the Glanza slipsliderg, I love it so much. I have driven many cars but none put such a smile on my face as the Glanza, it is about as close to driving a gokart on the road as I ever experienced
Spanky - I was living down in Tampa Florida for a while and moved to Atlanta about 6 months ago. I am back and forth between here and Ireland often though.
I find that American cars are big and boat-like and never feel very fast to me but they do sound great and have such effortless power. I drove a V8 Chevy Tahoe 7000 miles across the US and back and it felt like a tank but when you dropped the right foot to the floor that thing could move! with a sens of effortlessness.
As for Carbon Fibre.... I had to take the carbon bonnet off my Glanza because it faded pretty badly but I have a really nice carbon front splitter for it, havent gotten round to fitting it yet though

give me a shout before you go man, will give you some ideas of things to do. Dont spend too much time in Orlando... its boring after you do the parks. Head over to the gulf coast smashing part of the state, Tampa is a great spot, there is always something going on. I lived downtown and there was never a weekend that you didnt have loads of stuff to do.
You have the Tampa Bay Rays, Tampa Bay lightning (ice hockey... slaughter on the ice!), UFC is on there sometimes, lots of clubs, bars, beaches, fishing, comedy clubs, state/county parks, shopping, busch gardens etc etc so much to do. I know a good agency that does short term property rentals too so let me know if you need any info and I will sort you out.
Perfect trip would be
4 or 5 days in Orlando
Hire car drive to Kennedy space center
Drive down to Miami for a couple of days
Drive up to Tampa and settle in for the rest of your stay
You are planning on going at a nice time too, from Jan to May it is perfect... after that it is horrible same as where I am at the moment. I havent been able to go outside for the past 4 weeks because of the heat, feel like a prisoner.

we were in orlando last September for two weeks and hit all the park including busch gardens and the space centre.
will prob repeat some of the better ones this time but we are planning to do a lap basically down the gulf coast to miami and the keys and back up the Atlantic coast returning to orlando for the last few days.
i will give you a shout closer to the time once we know exactly where and for how long etc
cheers

Sounds great, if you are going up the East coast make sure you go to St Augustine, oldest city in America and its a lovely spot. Do the haunted lighthouse tour at night
