Gas Strut Help 1 Year, 6 Months ago Karma: 148
Yo!
I got a gas strut for the engine lid in my shipment of parts from Wales.

Strut itself is fine but the brackets are screwed. They were fab'd from aluminium. Just basic L-shape brackets, pretty simple. In my school days I could have knocked em out in a lunch break in engineering class, but now I have no access to a bench vice, pillar drill or most importantly the aluminium.

I really want to fit this now, so is there anyone on here who has access to any of the above, can make up the brackets or know where I could get them made? Need to be approx 5mm thick to be strong enough not to bend or split over time with metal fatigue (that's what happened with the brackets on the strut now.)

Cheers!

I have some coated steel about 5mm thick and 15mm wide sitting on my desk in work. I also have the bench vice at home and drill if you want to drop down and make something up this evening your more than welcome to.

Aluminum will fatigue earlier than steel, but it won't rust. Will bring it home anyway if you want and I haave primer and silver, black, red and blue paint at home as well.

Oh you are the man Ray! Not going to make it now this evening, made other arrangements after the miserable failing of the mini-meet. When you are back from hols, and we are doing the other bits, I will make them up. Have the originals as templates.

Not worried about the rust if the are painted properly. Sound, thanks Ray!

I might have what you need.

I have/had a gas strut but where it connects to the engine lid is not solid on the Spider lid. So, basically it broke.

I have to see what part broke- I think its the socket that holds the ball. But aluminium brackets are 100%.

If I can't rebuild mine, you can have the brackets.

I'm going to have to get another one - so handy !
