Interesting thread
I began a couple of years back looking in to alternative theories and viewpoints and initially found it pretty interesting. Then I found the path of skepticism and have never looked back.
My views on religion and everything else that has no basis in fact have completely changed. I always referred to myself as open minded however I believe I was open minded and slightly misguided. I now think of myself still as open minded but now with a sense of direction.
As David Icke was mentioned above I will start with him. I too used to read some of his writings with great interest but like so many of these people when you scratch the surface you suddenly expose extreme views and a general lack of any foundation in reality. It is difficult to read his writings now that I have learned his beliefs on the reptile people etc... it all sounds like a badly written episode of "V".
The Obama Deception - ever see it? Well its another one of those videos that is set to trance type music and essentially brainwashes the viewer in to taking speculation as fact, this is a dangerous thing. It is good to see that those who have posted in this thread so far are of the questioning type who dont just take things that are spoon fed to them but actually ask questions.
Religion is taking a particularly prominent position in my mind and has done for the past year or so. The more I think about organised religion the more it looks like a socially acceptable cult. I have no issue with people who are believers but I do have an issue with religions being above the law and above question. The Islamic religion for example teaches some very hateful messages however if you, as a non-muslim, question these messages you are a islamaphobe. Similarly in Ireland the Catholic church has gotten away with murder. In my head I cannot live with the fact that I am a Catholic as belonging to such an organisation is, for me, supporting its actions. If for example I belonged to a swimming club and it transpired that the leaders of this club were physically and sexually abusing kids who were in the care of the club I would remove myself from it. With the same thought process I cannot remain a member of the Catholic church. This is not a moral judgement on anyone who chooses to remain a member but merely a personal feeling. I have begun defection proceedings to have myself officially removed as a member of the Catholic church.
If you are interested in alternative thinking and analysis you should check out some of these very entertaining publications and personalities, they never cease to explain and clarify points that I sometimes have pondered a lot.
Finally I believe that we are at the dawn of a new enlightenment. When the renaissance occurred it propelled humanity forward and I believe we are in the midst of something similar, I hope for humanities sake that we are.
