PlayStation 3 Suffering From Widespread PSN Error
Many owners left unable to play certain titles tonight due to login error.
by Jim Reilly
US, February 28, 2010 -

SCEA is looking into widespread reports tonight of PlayStation Network login errors causing many left unable to play games, and even lose trophies, on certain PlayStation 3 consoles.

"We're aware that many of you are having problems connecting to PSN, and yes, we're looking into it," the company said in a statement. "Stay tuned for updates."

Forum members and e-mail tipsters are saying this problem is primarily affecting owners of the older model of the PlayStation 3, and is even causing users to lose trophies previously earned. Many titles, such as Heavy Rain, are also now unplayable due to connection issues with Sony's servers.

One theory points to an issue with the console's internal calendar, which is reportedly resetting pre-slim models to 12/31/1999.

It's unclear at the moment how widespread this issue is.

IGN has contacted SCEA for additional updates on what's causing these errors.

Update: Sony has confirmed that slim PS3s (the 120/250 GB models) appear to be unaffected.

Update 2: According to Sony's US PlayStation blog, the company has "narrowed down the issue and have engineers working to restore service even as you read this." However, despite more calls to Sony there's no indication on the time it'll take to fix – or indeed what the fix will be. More updates the instant we get them.

_____________________________________________________________________________________ _______

Following on from our story earlier today, about the PlayStation 3 network being down, we have now received updates. Numerous Forum posts are reporting that they have lost saved games and also ‘trophies’ already attained for in-game achievements.
Sony is aware of the problems and has issued a statement apologizing and saying they are working to restore service. Because the trouble has not affected the newer slimline PS3 models it implies the problem is not actually with the service itself. According to the guardian.co.uk, some people are speculating that the problem is connected to the clock or internal calendar of the machine. Because it occurred on the last day of February it’s possible it may be linked to miscalculations involving leap years.

Although sources suggest that saved games will be restored at some point it is not known what will happen about trophies already awarded. Until clearer advice is issued the warning is not even to try to use older Pre-Slim models of the PS3. Twitter users have been reporting about the error.

In the meantime Sony says that using their Twitter feed will give you all the information needed and any updates on the situation.

X-box's get red light syndrome that supposidly makes them in operable, no official fix found yet for it. I'm hoping sony get this resolved asap or all my trophies could be gone(What a waste of my life), might even involve downloading a patch from your PC to a pen and then from the pen to your PS3 because at the moment its preventing people getting online through their PS3

I saw a sign on the way home from work that says they repair xbox's and ps3 (light of deaths etc) i'll see what their quoting, with regards to the downloads, if you got a new ps3 or got it fixed you should be able to enter on under your avatar name and retrieve all the downloads for free as it keeps a record, i always delete my downloaded games to clear space etc

Good News, system fixed itself at Midnight last night, you may just have to re-sync your date and possibly trophies list and all will be back to normal

Anyone I have ever known to have bought an X-Box had it repaired at least once before swapping for a PS3. I know there are also people who have had no issues, but they seem to be lucky. Also, everthing was always an extra with the Xbox which put me off, like WIFI, HDD and so on, I know some of these are now included but the PS3 always had everything bundled in, even a BluRay player. When blue ray first came out, the CHEAPEST player was 700 euro when you could buy a PS3 for I think approx 350, so you got a top end games console, Blu-Ray player, web browser plus lots more. I am totally sold, obviously.

Bad move, as Dave said, all your downloads can be redownloaded over and over again as it's on record that you paid for them. Its all on your PSN account.
