toms/bomex style air intake scoops 6 Years, 1 Month ago Karma: 9
hi lads, looking for your input on the toms/bomex style high intake air scoops which replace the engine inspection panel, I love the look of them, and have a full toms body kit already on the car, but do the scoops have pros or cons?????? Im not gona get a toms air intake box(piggy bank does not allow for one) so am I upsetting the airflow in and around the engine bay by fitting the scoops?????? Or is there an advantage to the air intake to the engine with the addition of the scoops??? thanks for any input on the topic. just to give an idea of what im talking about.

I have a carbon fiber version on my MR2. I installed it because I have a Blitz SUS filter which replaced the original air filter box. I would assume it diverts more cool air towards the filter and engine. How much more air, I don't know.

I had one on my car ... I am sure it upsets the air flow in the engine bay and I am sure it also gets more cold air into the engine bay ... I would more think of it for its cosmetic appearance .. here is mine .. I did put some mesh into it t make sure i didn't get any unwanted crap in the engine bay ..

There is a lot of debate about whether or not these scoops actually do anything.
From all the reading on the various forums most seem to say that unless you combine the toms scoop with the toms airbox then its a purely cosmetic thing.

I have read those forums too. It can't do any harm to give the engine access to more cool air.

Testing would need to be done to see if it disrupts the air flow through the engine bay.

I plan on making my own custom airbox when I have my engine back in the car and tuned.

As far as cosmetic looks, that's up to the person who owns the car if they want it for looks alone.

im not 100% on this but i think its purely cosmetic the air comes from the side vents and underneath the car so if the air is coming up from underneath wouldnt sending air from the top down upset the air flow in the engine bay the hot air goes up throught the engine lid so if you install this it wouldnt be venting propraly

As it has been mentioned, the way to do it properly would be to duct the air to a airbox for full benefit. The air box would shield the air from the heat of the engine.

Left on its own the scoop probably won't help as much.

Let's just agree to disagree.

sorry ive not been back to reply, was away the past week, i hear what your saying about not having much of an affect on the air intake unless you have a toms airfilter box fitted as well, it makes sence, but they do look lovely ummmmmmmmmmmmmmm. i guess now its decession time

So, what you are basically saying here that when Toyota designed the MR2, making the cooling to the engine at the back extremely efficient (all those little vents dotted around the car serve a purpose you know), they actually done a terrible job and a bunch of tiddlywinks in a sweatshop factory are correcting their errors by churning out ropey fibre glass copy scoops?

Ok then.

You have obviously failed to understand me, that is not what I am saying.

If Toyota in all its greatness made the MR2 perfect, then there would be nobody trying to improve on it.

Huh? You said "it can't do any harm", when in fact thats exactly what it can do, by disrupting the already efficient feeds of air flow to the engine.

Your statement was quite a bold one to make, especially since no doubt millions were spent on the design of this exact thing, when all they needed to do was lob a stupid looking scoop on he roof.

Silly Toyota, if only they knew eh?

Ladies Ladies put down the hand bags ...

Look none of you are ever going to be driving your cars on the public roads at speeds that will make any difference good or bad to the performance of your cars ...

I will conduct an experiment for you guys when at Mondello park ... I have a scoop

I will do 5 timed laps without the scoop and 5 with the scoop and compare times and handling ...

so no more fighting

Thanks Japohara.

Going by cs1980 comments, TOM'S do not know what they was doing when they made the scoop.

"TOM'S Co., Ltd (株式会社トムス Kabushiki-gaisha Tomusu?) is a factory supported racing team and tuner of Toyota and Lexus vehicles. The name stands for Tachi Oiwa Motor Sport. Their head office is located in Tokyo, Japan"

The toms scoop is designed to work with a toms air box which is sealed from the engine bay so without the box to go with it the scoop disrupts the airflow in the engine bay which Toyota designed in a way to force air in from the bottom channeled through the under trays and up through the engine lid vents creating downforce etc

The TOM'S air box was made from carbon fiber and was used with the scoop on the n/a MR2 to help give it a ram air effect.

I think this topic has gone way over the top.

Unless there is concrete proof (anybody got a wind tunnel) that this hinders the performance, then I still stand by what I said earlier.

Sorry just seeing this now.

Your comment is a bit of a fail, since you don't really know what you are talking about. The TOM's scoop is for use in conjunction with the incredibly rare airbox, which was for NA cars only. This set up has proven gains.

The SW20 MR2 already had superbly efficient airflow from the factory, sticking one of these ebay specials on upsets it, so why would you even bother unless you just like the look of it?

To try and argue about this with me is certainly a road to nowhere, what i don't know about JDM aftermarket parts for the MR2, isn't really worth knowing.

You've made yourself look a bit silly putting that video up to support what you think and disprove my earlier comment, what i am telling you is fact. Sorry about that.

You are too keen to jump in and argue because you do not seem to read what I have written.

So here it is again with copy and paste: The TOM'S air box was made from carbon fiber and was used with the scoop on the n/a MR2 to help give it a ram air effect.

I linked the video to show that TOM'S was supported by Toyota.

But you know everything there is to know about aftermarket parts, isn't that right ?

Please show us/me your infinite wisdom oh mighty internet keyboard warrior.

Rant over. I do not wish to discuss this any more.

Awh crap I just bought a replica toms scoop for my N/A Japohora did you ever try that experiment with and without the scoop?!

I can see the point on airflow as the scoop will pull air down while the side vent beside induction will send air up counteracting each other, but I reckon you have to be going fairly fast for this to be a major problem. Things do stay that bit cooler on that side of the engine bay also I seem to have the fan intentionally running all the time in engine bay on right side anyway which should help with over heating and sending out excess hot air out of the engine lid.

Most folks would be buying them for aesthetic appeal. It's unlikely to make a big difference on the street. Trackdays - who knows?
