Grrrr little vandals! 8 Years, 6 Months ago Karma: 117
Came out to find this happened to my car last night...

Obviously some little amateur, as they didn't even check for an alarm, as soon as it it
went off they 1/2 closed the door. I only noticed when i diarmed the alarm this morning and it chirped to say it went off. Then i noticed the door open red light on the dash..

www.puredream.net/mr2/door_lock.jpg

This is one of the reason i de-locked all my my other cars, but they were hatch backs.

Does anyone know if any other Toyota car rear door handles match MR2, may avensis or so?

alternatively what are my options for replacing lock barrel and making it work with my existing keys?
Thanks,
T

Jesus that sucks mate. I've found Cranley cars (Toyota Dealer near M50 Redcow) to be very helpfull in getting parts, possibly if you contact their parts department (parts@cranleycars.ie) they might be able to sort out a new barrel for you based on the key number.

There is a guy on MR2OC breaking a rev3 that could do you a deal on the lock kit with keys

I think i am going to just fibre glass the passenger side, i don't fancy either refitting
locks everywhere or asking toyota for matching barrel.

I think i might just fibre glass both sides but leave the barrel on the drivers side, albeit de-locked. That way i know in an absolute emergency i can drill the door/fibre glass cover and get access to unlock the car.
Am just mulling over the options atm...

Seeing this has got me concerned for my own MR2.

If you was to de-lock the car then a small solar charger in the car would be a good idea to keep the battery topped up so you don't get locked out.

Any other ideas guys ?

I have de-locked all my previous cars, and only once couldn't get into my car due to a fault alarm fob, pity it was 3:30am at a field after a music festival, thankfully it was a hatch back, hence i am thinking about options for the day u get locked out of MR2.
Smashing a window might not be too bad.
Then again it's simple for thieves to smash a window too...

My car has been broken in to twice in last two years. I had to replace ignition barrel, door lock. Now the thing is if there is no door lock they simply try to get somthing in between the door gap to pull the door back .
The last time car's where vandelised on the street, they seen I had big chain and lock , plus steering wheel clamp. with red light flashing. They did try take a mate's honda on the road pulled the door right back, got in then tried the barrel. I had to selltle with big key scrape whole way down the side of my car.
If they can't take it they will damage it. It will cost me 300 euro to have side of my car painted. They don't care they answer to no one. The police don't give a toss unless they happen to turn the corner and catch them. I and my mate had to just suck it up. Don't matter what you do if they cant take it in most cases they will damage it.
The best we can do is make sure they can't take the whole car. thats it. sadly. I have heard it said put the car under a street light at night, but sure that only says here look nice motor take it.
coroters lock smith on peters road walkinstown, did my barrel for me 50 euro.

I've a camera on the top level of the house looking down on the driveway.

They can, of course, hide their faces but I guess the threat of having their clothing, height etc caught on camera is an added deterrent

I know this is a touchy subject but this is why it's always best to buy parts from a Toyota dealer or 'known' people, who have a history of interacting and being involved with the community, some proof of ownership and a legitimate reason for selling.

If you have a non-airbag steering wheel, you can buy a part that makes it detachable.

I think I might delock my MR2 when I get round to putting it back on the road. I would rather have a damaged door than a stolen car.

There is a car alarm that does away with the ignition keys and instead relies on a special key card that can remain in your pocket. Just walk next to the car and it unlocks. Walk away and it locks. Sit in the car and you can start it up. I forget who makes it though.
