Wanted, MR2 for V6 Conversion. 1 Year, 6 Months ago

Hi all, New to the MR2.ie forums so would just like to say hello to everyone before I get started.
Anyways as the title says, I am looking for an MR2 for a V6 conversion. Have been doing a little research over the last couple of months into a project car. Looked into a few but finally decided on a MR2 V6. Always had a soft spot for them so it seemed like the best choice.
So what I am after is a car with straight body work, the condition of the paint is unimportant. The engine can be totally knackered but the gearbox must be perfect and a manual. Electrics must be perfect and all the switches need to work. I will be installing a 3vz-fe engine and ecu so I need perfect electrics to start of with. Last and probably the most important is it most be cheap . If anyone thinks they have something that fits the bill, give me a shout.

Hey, welcome aboard!
There is actually a few of us on here planning to do the same thing as a track car. Would be handy to have two parallel projects running for comparison / help etc.
Four of us are planning on doing this together with limited knowledge / experience and resource, so it will be interesting.
I take it you are a mechanic or at least very handy with cars?
There is a guy on the forum, Gwrinkle who has done this. He says there is not a lot of top end speed / bhp, but what it does have is bags of torque. (sounds awesome too!) He mentioned to me before, that he thinks its to do with the gearbox. The gear ratios are too short for the power band on the 3VZ-FE. Apparantly the Carina E gearbox fits and gives better gear ratios. That's second info, maybe Gwrinkle can confirm / clarify if he sees this post.
Best of luck.

thanks for the heads-up on those, think you are right about the body-kit, would def have to go, not that there is anything wrong with it but its just that I personal prefer the cleaner look. When I eventually have the engine transplant done I plan on a simple body-kit that will drop the car to the ground.

Swagger heres something that might interest you,
gt4.mwp.id.au/Driveline/E%20Gearbox%20Information.pdf
Just glance over it and it's heavy reading but I will give it a good read trough over the next few days and let you know what way I decide to go.
Not a mechanic but I have always done my own work on both my own cars and friends & family. Anyways I know more than my fare share but when it comes to electrics I just about know the positive for the negitive .
Are you planing an tuning the 3vz or are you leaving it stock?

Great article thanks, ill give it a proper read myself in the next few days.
Fair play to doing all that and not being a mechanic. Im considering doing some evening class or something in car mechanics. I have a very basic overview of the engine componants, what they do and why, but would love to know more and about more technical parts. It would also be great to get some practical hands on work on an engine too.
Anything I know is pretty much what I have read, been told or managed to figure out myself.
Anyway, one of the lads involved, Ray, is pretty handy and should manage to steer us through.
As for stock or tuned, it has not really come up yet. Probably stock initially as this is a pocket money project, not a big, heavily funded one. It's possible that we may tune it up a little as we go...

Excellent vid Ozzy, looks very familiar. I'm pretty sure I read through the entire build thread of that project on MR2oc or somewhere like that.

Brabazone, check out this V6 build thread. Great references and guide. He mentions a source for a wiring guide on Two Brutal.

Good video Ozzy, thanks.
Swagger, I found this and thought you might be interested,

Should be good enough to sort out the wiring and a NA engine.
If you know anyone that knows anything about ECUs it would be great. Have being researching into it for a couple of weeks. The problem is that the 3vz-fe in the Camry is specif to the auto-box, or that is what some people are saying. I was wondering it there is anyone in Ireland or the UK that can reprogram the ECU for a manual box. I have read that there is someone on the east coast of the US that does them, my understanding is that she clears the ECU and then reprograms it for a manual box while at the same time disabling the immobilizer.
Now, it could all be pie in the sky, as I said earlier I know little or noting about the wiring and electronics of a car but it does kind of make since. Almost forgot, it's suppose to increase the rpm range from the factory set 7200rpm.

Excellent cheers mate. Idiots wiring guide for 3VZ-FE. I'm and idiot, so this should really help.
To be honest, im a total novice with ECU wiring and programming etc, so I cant comment on any of that, thats all news to me. I will happily share anything I find/learn though. Im sure we can help each other out along the way.

Hi Brabus, welcome to the site and hope your build goes well for you. Alot of your questions are already answered on TwoBrutal, if your not resigstered there, do it and use the search function and look at the Woodsport builds to see the best of way to do things.
WRT the ECU thing, there is the possibility of a daughter board coming out for the 3VZFE and 3SGTE in the near future created by a guy called jon.sole on TwoBrutal. The standard ECU doesn't need to be altered to run the engine in a Mrk II, but you do need to do some wiring tweeks and get a modified ISCV to remove idling issues when cold. Otherwise get a programable ECU which IMO is probably the only way to go with a serious build and leave it open for turbo's, s/charging etc.
Getting this engine to rev to 7200 is not productiive unless you get the heads worked on to flow more air they are very restricted. A guy called Fourvsix is your man in that regard, he is based in England but is a fountain of knowledge. He is not on TwoBrutal anymore and I am not sure what if any sites he frequents now. He also produces the engine mount as well.
Any questions, just ask, if I can help I will, but I am on a learning curve as well with this.
