Tuning my MR2 2 Years, 5 Months ago
|
|
|
Right...where do I start.
I have a 94 MR2 turbo which is fairly standard. It has Bilsteins, an aftermarket exhaust and an induction kit. It has loads of other non engine mods like a TRD bodykit, push button start, Recaro's, wheels etc etc.
As I said in my introduction, I'm putting it back in action. I want to get a new clutch, better brakes and up the power of engine. Sooooo what do I do now? I can get it serviced by my mechanic who's very good but is it a waste of time him servicing it? I'm going to change the timing belt, oil, all filters and basically check everything. I'm willing to spend a good bit on the car now.
Should I get a specialist to work on it and what mods would ye do to it?
Thanks for any advice.

first things first.do you have an aftermarket ecu?if not it'd be the first thing id do with regards to power.my engine was completly standard a few months back and i bought a power fc.mapped it while the car was still standard and gained 45 bhp an 56 torque.so with your exhaust and intake mods you should see some nice gains.i havnt changed the clucth yet so i wouldnt know but im sure someone on here will.as far as brakes i think the standard brakes are well capable of stopping my 2 but if your going for big power ud probably want to uprate them alright.maybe ebc red stuff pads and drilled and grooved discs would provide a lot better stopping power.i dont know of any mr2 specialist in the country myself but im sure theres more than enough garages around the country that are handy with em.

Depends a bit on where you are located... also what are you planning to do with the car - daily driver? Sunday driver? Racer?

Thanks for the help lads.
Its a Sunday car only. I'm living in Cork. I don't know if it has an uprated ECU. I'll look into that straight away so. I'll have to change the clutch because if I rev the car to 4k and leave the clutch up quickly it slips all through first gear and most of second gear too!!

Thats a fairly impressive gain after fitting the FC, Did you have any problems getting hold of it as I believe they are discontinued now.

@brian_lad ya do mate.what part of cork are you in?im in youghal.
@clearsky ya it is.it was only running 188 bhp tho when they tested it and it gained the 45 from that.got it mapped in t.d.p.no actually i bought it brand new with the commander for 700 from a lad on ebay.which i thought was great coz it was by far the cheapest i could find and brand new aswell.a lot of people are looking for more than that second hand..

What sort of power are you looking for ?
From a rev3+, you can get up over the 300fwhp with just bolt-ons - you've exhaust donee - have you de-catted ? EBC, AFC and uprated Intercooler or Chargecooler.
I'm not sure of exact figures ut stock fuel system should be good up to aout 340fwhp.
Of course, as said abbove, you'll get more out of the aove mods with an aftermarket ECU-and a few people here have the PowerFC - so, you'll have support.
If you do get an EBC and say the SAFC2, you've nearly paid money for PFC - although, wideand and datalogit to factor into expenses as well.

Sorry for this now but I don't really know what a PFC or an SAFC2 really is
I'd like to get someone who really knows what they're doing to take a look at it sometime. I'd be aiming for about 340fwhp if I could.

I'd say my clutch gave up because age. Alot of people in the know give the 300bhp limit on the standard clutch.

oh rite.thats only up the road from me.an ya as spidey said 300 whp is easily achievable with bolt ons.ive an apexi induction kit.apexi gt spec exhaust.berk downpipe and im gonna get an intercooler next and get it remapped and so ill let ye know what the outcome is of that.
@clearsky ya it was a good deal alright.i got it off this guy in the link below.its the second last one.94-99.make him an offer of 900 dollars.maybe 50 he'll charge for shipping.950 dollars is 650 euro.customs charge will be 50-60 then.

No prob - PFC is the Apexi Poweer FC ECU. And SAFC2 is an Apexi Super Air-Fuel Computer.
The good thing about getting up near 340fwhp is that you can get your local mechanicc to do most of the work and then go and get ECU set up by someone.
To be honest, I'm not a mechanic and I fitted my AVC-R boost controller, fittted my Chargecooler. And the ct20b won't get you to 340fwhp - so, you'll need a turbo upgrade. ATS have a CT27, which is bolt-on and Tim at TBDevelopments has some great Garrett turbo kits.
So, you can use local mechanic to fit above and then go for the tune.

Definitely - I can't find the posts but a few years back, a few peoplee donee comparisons of air intakee temps of CC vs uprated IC and CCC won out easily, I think they say the st205cc is good up to somewhere around 440fwhp. And the radtec should e more.
So, with the cooler intake temps, it's denser etc - but to get the most out of it, you'd need the ECU tune. I had a SAFC2 last time but next Spring, I'll e going with a PFC and then whenever I have moree cash, I'll tune it for E85
Quandry has done the E85 route and when I heard about cooling propertiees of E85 and the fact its cheaper than unleaded, I was sold.

I was thinking of a PFC as well, is there no other problems with running on E85?

No problems - just need to be sure you have access to E85. Here in Dublin, selected Maxol stations have it and I'm lucky enough that there is one nearby.
Quandry should be along to tell you spcifics but I think he plans to fill up on E85 but if he happens to run out and no E85 around, he just fills up with normal unleaded and loads up a different map.
The only worry that I had about E85 was that Zeitronix said that the ethanol content could vary from 60 to 92% - so, you wouldn't want to be mapping on the limits assuming E85.
www.zeitronix.com/Products/ECA/ECA.htm
Although, if you went down this route and got an ECA, I'm not sure the PFC supports it. If you got one of the ECU's that do (I think AEM), you'd still have to pay $199 for he ECA and about $350 for a GM Flex Fuel sensor.
I think when I come to do it, I'll talk to Quandry again - he's not using the ECA and has put a lot of research into it.

Just rang Stephen in Monumentum Motorsport there. He seems like a sound lad. Gonna get the cars serviced as planned and get him to do the servicing work on it.
