Advice for 17" wheels - tyres etc 1 Year, 7 Months ago Karma: 196
So, as you probably know, I am currently running the car on standard wheels with Toyo's all round in the standard sizes.

When I bought the car, the previous owner give me a set of 17" 5 spoke rims which are in fairly good nick (pic below), only a little kerbing on one wheel (hints for fixing this easily appreciated).

Rather than replacing the 15" Toyo's and refurbing the standard wheels (they do need it) I am considering spending the money on new rubber for the 17s and swapping the wheels over. The wheels themselves are not a major departure from the OEM look.

All 4 of the 17" wheels are 7" rims. Am I right in thinking I can put anything between 195 and 225 on a 7" wheel? ... or does this depend on the tyre manufacturer?

To summarise:

Currently 195&225/50/15
Proposing 205&225/35-45/17

The car is sitting on fairly new (5000miles) standard suspension.

This change represents only a small increase in overall circumference (according to here), so no major difference to the speedo reading.

Is there anything else I need to be wary of (I am a bit tyre/wheel dumb)?

Another thing, is it easy to change the logo in the centre cap of the wheel, are these likely to some sort of standard size?

Thanks guys n gals

If the toyo's are any good I will buy them from you, just to try them out.

No probs Ray

You can have the wheels with them for easy changing. Not sure if I will sell or hold onto them for a track day or similar tyre mashing day out

I have 235/45/17 goodyear f1 on the rear and 215/45/17 toyos on the front of mine the Rims are 7.5s the rev1 I had where 7'S and had 40 profile tyres on it (if you want you can fit my wheel to yours and see what you think of the drive)
I like the 17's

Have you got spacers on yours Ricky?

The advice from the OC is that I should consider 10-20mm spacers. These wheels have been on my car before I bought it. The pics below are from the ad that I bought the car from, but they should give an idea of how they sat on the car with 205/40 tyres all round

You will need to check the offset of those wheels. It could possibly be stamped on the inside. 17x7 is not really a very desireable size for the back. A lot of people suggest that the best overall MKII fitment is 17x8 front 17x9 rear (referred to as staggered fitment) both with a +35 offset. You can get around these things with spacers/extended studs etc.

Having said all that my car is on 17x8 +35 all around and it works ok, looks a bit tucked on the back, but handling/grip seems to work quite well (245/45 rear and 215/45 front)

I will need to check the stamps on the wheel to see exactly what they are. Had a look today to check what width they are and that they are all the same ... which they are.

I'm not really interested in buying new wheels so its either use the 17s or the 15s. At least the 17s would be a change and would probably look better on the car without deviating too much from Toyota's original 'vision'.

One of the guys on OC said he thought these might be an ET40 wheel. Not sure if this is something you can tell from a pic but .....

I think I will put one of hte wheels on the rear of the car in near future to see how it looks. They currently have tyres but some of them are about 5000 miles beyond legal - I kid you not there is steel showing on one.

The offset (ET) should be stamed on the back of the wheel as quandry said. Don't buy new wheels just tyres I wouldn't use 35 profile tyres even 40's can be harsh in my opinon(said a man with coilovers)but it could be the rev1 shocks I had before the coilovers

40 profile gives me an overall diameter very close to what I have now so its the most likely option

I will have another look at the wheels to see what they are.

I will buy the spacers if it will help but if it needed e.g. 10mm spacers, then I don't really see the point. 15mm or more might be worth the money. The spacers linked on the OC thread were £120 (ish) ... pricey enough for what are essentially just lumps of metal with holes in them

I could just bung a few B&Q repair washers in behind the wheel ... do the job rightly

Halfords spacers £20, they are just a lump of metal that you cant even see.
