Just received this in the post this morning. It's excellent, very happy with it, great detailing. Bought it from HW Japan, (thanks for the link Spidey) they have a few different styles, models and at various price ranges. I spent a while looking at them all and decided to go with this one. Wasnt cheap, worked out at something like 40euro delivered but you just cant buy these in the shops and I have always wanted a model MR2. Ideally, what I REALLY want is a 1:18 die cast one, but have never seen one and I have looked EVERYWHERE.
Cant wait to get started on this, but need to go and get paints, brushes and glue etc, as I want to paint the parts pre-assembly to get everything right and neat too. It will be a work of pride!
Thing is, which is a little odd, is that the body comes as a single shell. An N/A shell. It has the N/A engine lid and even has, in the tiniest of raised lettering "G-Limited" on the boot lid, but comes with "Twin Cam 16 Turbo" decals for the rear side trims.
What is also weird, as I said, this is a Veilside MR2 kit, but the one piece shell is molded with the full N/A body and the Veilside kit is seperate, ie, just like a real life body kit. Problem is, the N/A body is not removable, so its not like an interchangeable kit. You buy a Veilside and then get the surprise option of keeping it stock (you could have bought one of the 3 stock versions though?!?) or then have to cut up the shell to fit the Veilside. A bit of a pain. The instructions tell you to cut off the front and rear bumpers and the side skirts with a scalpel. Anyone see the issue with that? This isnt paper, its hard plastic, the scalpel would need serious pressure which means the blade could break, or slip and either ruin the body or remove a finger. I think the only neat way is with a dremel tool but seems like a lot of work to get the model you thought you had ordered. Anyway, im sure I will just enjoy it all the more.
Seems like good quality, you get all the lights, reg plates and TWO dash boards and two sets of wiper blades, so you can choose if the car is to be LHD or RHD.
I've been keeping an eye on these model kits for about 2 months now & they seem to be getting steadily dearer, The cheapest ive seen the veilside one go for was about € 55 before delivery so you got a bargain even if it does seem steep, Ive yet to come across a 1/18 diecast of a SW20, loads of MK3 ones, you could be looking at min €50 for a good make 1/43 that are usually limited editions, approx 2,500 to 3,000, but ive seen Targa ones for for nearly €200
Dave, interesting. So I did ok on this, thats good. God, they are expensive in general, seems that rarity really drives up the value. Min of €50 for a 1:43? Thats tiny! The Spider looks great though!
There are tons of 1:18 MK3's alright, but not one MK2. I cant believe that there isnt enough demand for someone to make one. Im sure they would sell plenty.
Anxiously awaiting the day somebody finally puts one on the market!
the best way to do it is to paint everyting first then assemble. ive a few made and 1st time i assembled then paint aw the mess. wat i want is a petrol rc body which can be got for the electric so that going to be my lil project.

Heres a diecast 1/43 of Spidey's spider
Stop tempting me ! I'm going to have to get a mini-me now !

Yeah, I used to make a TON of airfix kits growing up. Then in my teens built a lot of RC cars, boats and planes. I wouldnt dream of building a kit and then painting. Garaunteed to be messy. I'll remove all the parts from the dies with a blade, file off any rough edges, lay all the parts out and give everything a fine spray coat of plastic primer. Then they will get whatever colour they need to be and finally all get a clear coat, then the assembly! Looking forward to it, but first I have to carefully shave off the stock body kit....hmmm..hope it comes out ok after that. Intrusive surgery. Think ill dremel most of it out of the way and then hand file the finish with a tiny file, nice and easy!
I managed to get a couple of hours in the micro body shop this evening and started grinding off the stock body, ie, skirts, front and rear bumpers.
Stock skirt removed:

Veilside skirt dry fitted:

Once these were off as a whole, I ground down the edges nice and close and then just filed the edges carefully and accurately with a small hand file, stopping and dry fitting all the parts as I went to check lines and fit.
When I was happy with the fit, I started to fit the Veilside piece by piece.
First the rear bumper, then the side skirts, the front bumper and chin splitter (front bumper is two piece) and lastly, the main spoiler body followed by the “adjustable” blade (spoiler is also two piece).
Veilside kit fully fitted:

I was pretty happy with the fit all around, spent plenty of time getting it as close as possible before fixing the kit. However, there were a couple of small issues whereby the kit was not actually a perfect fit and could only be sorted once the kit was fitted.
Issue 1: The leading edge of the side skirts fell just shy of the rear of the front wheel arch, so I had to open the rear end of the arch out a little to line up with the front of the skirt.
Issue 2: The very front of the front wings was a little higher than the bumper, so I had to use a little bit of filler (super glue) and then blend the wing into the bumper.
Issue 3: There were some rough edges all around the Veilside kit from the molding process that had to be cleaned up and blended in.
I even went as far as to de-badge the shell. The front Toyota badge came away with the stock bumper and I filed off the boot lid badges, like the “G-Limited” badge and smoothed it off.
So all good now, in terms of body work, filler and prep for primer.
All going well, I will get a couple of hours tomorrow in the micro paint shop to give the shell a coat of primer and ready for paint.
I have decided that I am going to go to town on the detail and try to make a 1:24 scale model of my own MR2. Why the hell not? That would be cool!
Obviously it won't be a 100% replica of my own as it has a Veilside kit whereas my actual 2 is a Toms/Sard combo and the wheels will be different, but I will do what I can ;) :doc:

Got a good few hours yesterday and a couple more today and nearly done!
Would have finished it this evening but my clear coat ran out midway while clear coating the body shell. As it ended, it spattered large spray all over it and I hope it's not ruined Ill get a new can during the week and try sort it out, failing that, I can just pretend I did it on purpose to make it look like it is just out of the carwash! The wet look
Anyway, spent lots of time carefully detailing it to look like my own car and IMO it didnt turn out so bad. Tricky bit was trying to get neat straight edges and details on such a small model, it's only 1:24, barely bigger than 2 ciggerette boxes. Im not 100% happy with it, but close enough.
Spraying the shell Caribbean Blue using the good old washing line and some speaker wire:

Under carriage detailing, tried to make it look kinda used and dirty rather than clinical and crisp:

Engine detailing, see gearbox, down pipe, sump, suspension, even the tyre thread is cool:

Dash detailing. Look familiar?

Have the glass painted from the inside to mimic my rear window tint and a visor plus rubber trim:

Shell painted and ready for proper clear coat job:

CF Bonnet, scratched millions of tiny lines into it to mimic the CF fibre pattern. At the moment it's kinda ruined by the clear coat spatter, hope I can sort it:
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
Side vent and engine lid detailing. Managed to darken the vents in the lid:
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
Rear detailing, lights, reg and centre panel MR2 badge. Painted the black outline on the light clusters and then painted the inside of them red:
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
Flash is too bright but shows the lights off a little better:
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
All that is left to do:
1. Finish the clear coat off and tidy up.
2. Fit glass to the shell.
3. Fit mesh to inside of front bumper. My own little touch!
4. Fit shell to chassis.
5. Fit exhaust back box and tail pipes.
6. Enjoy my mini 2 :) Will be cool to leave on the dash at car shows etc.
At the end of the day the body kit and wheels are different to my own, but at a glance most people shouldn't notice.
Is this the track car you guys have been banging on about
Nice clean finger nails BTW
Seriously, looks quite impressive ... I might have a go my self. In terms of your over-spray problems, as with a real car, get some very light wet n dry and give it a quick going over. Just keep going until you get a smooth finish.
In terms of the bonnet, I would drop Ben @ carbon fibre creations a PM to see if he would post over some off cuts of the CF wrap he uses.
I hope you used the proper Carib Blue colour ... official 8b6 spray
@Fingernails, cheers, didn't know you cared. You would know I am a white collar huh?
@Overspray, yep, did that on the interior in the 1:1 scale model. Just that the clear spattered in mid pass and is kinda heavy. I have very fine wet/dry block, but this is really tricky to rub down, so small and intricate, I risk completely ruining it, have to be very careful with it.
@CF bonnet...?? good idea, but detail/fibres would be too big and throw off the scale I reckon.
@Blue...eh...not exactly dude, it's modeling paint, so that code doesn't exist as such, but as you can see from the pic, it's so close you can't tell.
I'd say you would enjoy this, maybe not necessarily the Veilside one, with all the extra bother, but you could get a stock Rev3 Turbo and make look like your own.
How cool would it be at a car show and we all have mini versions of our own cars sitting on our dashboards?

Swag, I know you want to do this right. You should have used the proper colour BAD BOY. Have a watchy looky at the vid below for the bonnet ....
Thanks Frank & Quandry, although Frank, I don't think you actually gave me the KC.
Spanky, good vid. Handy method for full size items, bu i'm not sure you get how small this model is, so that just wouldn't look right.
And eh, one more time for ya...model shop > model paint > no Toyota paint codes. Capish?
Joking aside, it's actually bang on colour wise, if only the clear didn't F**K up on me. Still hoping I can sort it. Looks shite atm, after all of that effort! ARGH!
Ehh....it might. Ill give it a try. Maybe even some T-Cut might work too. Don't wanna totally balls it either, and rub the black into the blue...ill see what I can do. Might end up having to redo the whole thing
Checked. Dont have it and it actually doesnt matter as im not planning on blending the model into the wing of my actual car. Its just a model. I wanted it to look LIKE my car, but not BE my car. The wheels and kit are different anyway.
Cheers, but it was very hard work. Ever tried to get a meerkat to pose for a pic? They are little shits man! Really paranoid, always seem to be on the lookout for something....
Ok, sorry, but you pushed me to a Halfords rant now:
Maybe you can get paint mixed up your way man, but any Halfords near me, you spend half your time looking for a member of staff because they are all out the back smokin' doobies Then when you do get one of the spotty, greasy haired, hippy, tweenies, they don't know what year it is, never mind what the hell a spark plug is, or where they keep ANYTHING! They are the most useless bunch of morans I have ever met. They would rather tell you that they don't have any copper grease than look for it. That happened to me recently, he said they had none, I went looking and found it myself. He could have just scraped it off his scalp. They don't know jack, so I wouldn't dream of asking for paint to be mixed, sure they would be too busy huffin it!
Makes me wonder though...these were the best CV's in the bin huh? What were the people like who didn't get the job? With all the unemployment these days, I can't believe they couldn't find a few car nuts to work there. Instead they hire people who only want the job to get a cool black and orange shirt for free and somewhere to hang out for a few hours and chat with other dumb ass' and then pretend to be invisible when approached by a customer
Yep, another day I walked in and four of them, a record 4 visible staff, where in a huddle talking about getting pissed, stoned and partying, while I stood beside them trying to get their attention for 5 solid minutes before finally shouting "excuse me, do any of you actually work here?" They all just turned and looked..... ehhhhh....wha?
I have been in a couple of Halfords up north though and in fairness the lads there, did in fact know their stuff and were very helpful and polite too. Different standards I guess
I dunno which is your local halfords but the one's i've been to (coolock, blanchardstown, liffey valley) I've always found the staff very helpful even though they have a reputation for being useless.
Spanky, will you not just send him a can of carrib. blue spray paint, we know you have a whole shed full of the stuff cause you're so in love with the colour
Cheers Mark. I wasn't going to name the particular stores, but Belgard Road and Naas, as in the M7 retail park. They are the two handiest ones for me, whether at home or around my parents house, where I grew up. Must try others ones then.
I use three different Halfords stores close to where I live and one beside my work.
It depends what you are looking for. The staff tend to be younger and more interested in shiny wheels, stereos and neon lights for under your car innit
The more mundane stuff like wipers, plugs, oil etc aren't interesting to them hence poor service.
I need to spray my front splitter (part of my planned winter touch up), so I will get a spare can of 8b6 for the swag-miester. My shed stock has run out as I have now painted my house carib blue .... to make me feel like I am always in my 2
