Defo an MR2 still, he might want to take of those sideskirts and make the aerodynamics a bit better

Anything is possible with comprimise and money.

I don't think it a MR2 anymore, it is a complete drag car catering to the specifics required to attain quick passes and nothing else, funky engineering project though.

I think if the drivetrain/engine layout changes, then its starting to become a different car.

What do people reckon should be the restrictions ? Same engine or any engine ? Just allow original block but uprated parts / strengthening ?

Would it still be considered an MR2 if it was powered by a Chevy Big block putting out 1500hp ? If you object to a Chevy motor, then why is it okay to run a 5s block ? Its a different engine family which just happens to mate with the 3S head

I'm with Slipslide on this - cool and amazing work to create it but its lost the essence of an MR2.

I don know. I wouldn't want an rx7 unless it was a v8.

I agree - thats fine when it comes to owning your own car etc - but for a world record, you have to draw the line somewhere.

It's still an mr2 imo, mr2 is only a name. If you put the engine into the back of a supra, it's still a supra. Toyota took an aygo and changed it from a ff to an mr car with a 1.8 turbo, it's still an aygo though

From the pureist's point of view, it's drastically and radically changed the car. But so have these others and they seem 'ok'. I think it's the overall idea of having the engine in the front which completely scraps the vision of godliness :) Sort of like when people make a Ferrari kit car out of a Peugot :lol2:

Right, IMO opinion, MR2 is not just a name, like Corolla or Avensis or Starlet. MR2 is an actual abbreviation of what the car is. Mid-Engined, RWD, 2 seater. Any deviation from that, means its not an MR2, even if it has the shell, doors, windows etc..

A line does have to be drawn somewhere, as Quandry said, for a world record, its got to be fair and within reason. What if I took a Ferrari Enzo and stuck and MR2 steering wheel and pop up lights on it. No matter how much MR2 stuff you add on, its not an MR2 because of a few MR2 parts. All this machine above has is an MR2 shell, EVERYTHING else is custom.

Spidey got it right on the head with Gravedigger, you wouldnt consider that an MR2 if it had an MR2 shell on it would you? You would just say, "oh cool, look, they stuck an MR2 body on a monster truck!" So we should really be saying here, "oh cool, look, they stuck and MR2 body on a mental dragster!" Altough in fairness, its more true to say that they built the dragster around and Mr2 body.

Actually now that I take a look back, I can see an exhaust header peeking out from just in front of the rear tyres.... hmmm maybe GRAVE DIGGER IS AN MR2!!!! with a Lexus V8 monster truck conversion

can't see how you can count that as an mr2. its only the cockpit area thats even mr2, the front and rear is all spaceframe. Its not even using a 3sgte to argue the fact its a supra engine.

This is about as close to funny car rules as you can get where someone build a full spaceframe chassis with what ever engine they want, and stick a fibreglass dodge viper shell ontop and calling it a dodge.

Think personally it needs to remain a full even modied toyota shell, with engine in the back atleast. Engines can be argued about if people start using V6's (not that i can see them breaking any records) or could even argue when people go to the 2.2 5s blocks.

The funny thing is that if you get someone who takes an MR2 then puts a Ferrari body kit - or lambo on it, then post up a pic, people will be quick to jump in and say 'blah blah it's just an MR2' (even if it has a V6 conversion)

When the beam of admiration casts the other way however, people are quick to jump up and down and say 'that's not an MR2'

I think it's just all Tall Poppy Syndrome

Latest info on the 'not mr2' is an 8.48@174mph Alex says that they are having troubles with the clutch. They are hoping to break in to the 7 second bracket next year. I really admire the engineering in this beast.
