Has anyone erer had or considered getting a vinyl car wrap maybe instead of a paint job?

Here is an example (honda S2000). I did see a Lotus Elise done in a matt black and it did look good.

What's the average life span of a wrap, does it peel or fade as it ages ?

Some cars look good with it on. A guy who writes for the Japanese Performance car magazine covered his Mazda MX5 with it and I really liked the look of it.

Being able to convert your car back to the stock factory color, by simply removing the wrap, is always a plus.

Like anything, you get what you pay for. The better the quality vinyl you go with, the better the result. Decent vinyl will have a high UV resistance, so should not fade. You should get several years out of it. A mate of mine does it at a commercial level, ie, vans and big ass buses, the Bus Eireann ones for example. You really need to have this professionally done. I promise you, without training and lots of experience, you will make a balls of this. There are many things you can have a go at yourself and do well, this is not one of them. There are many techniques for heat/stretch/bending of the vinyl around awkward curves and bends and it is way tougher than you think.

I have vinyl wrapped a few small items, like the centre console of my jeep. I did it in CF vinyl, 3M, really good stuff. It took three hours and was tricky but the finish is so good that it looks factory. Practice on small things first and maybe work your way up, ie, wing mirrors, bonnet and so on. Could take several pairs of hands for large areas.
