My mr2 is sitting in a shed cold and alone, with a head gasket blown.

I have recently been thinking about replacing the engine altogether.

Ok so mine is a non turbo 1995 and I thought that meant 3s-ge engine.

There is one for sale on done deal marked as a 3s-ge but it looks different and it is from a 92.. umm. will it fit?

can someone please explain to me what the story is with the engines and which one went in what car? or point me to a site that explains it. I don't want to buy the wrong engine. I really miss my car at this stage.

I think MR2's were sold in Ireland with a 3sfe or 3sge. The 3sfe (single cam) was a lower spec varient of the 3sge (twin cam). There was definately gen 2 and gen 3 varients of the 3sge but I am not sure if the 3sfe had that also.

In other countries the MR2 was sold with the 3sgte (three varients) and also 5sfe. Is your MR2 Irish sold or imported?

ok so i know mine is 3sge and this ad is for a 3sge but his must be a gen 2 not 3. so should i and can i put a gen 2 engine in?

According to this you are right as he is offering a 2nd gen and you have a 3rd gen engine.

I believe mounting-wise you shouldn't have a problem. I think it goes the same like with the 2nd and 3rd 3S-GTE - same engine mounts.

I wouldn't downgrade my 2 if I was you. Also, you may need an ECU and who knows what else.
If I'd do a downgrade from 3rd to 2nd gen 3s-gte, I would need ECU, AFM and few bits and pieces.

The block and head is similar. The only differences is the induction unit and the rocker cover. I know the MAP sensor is different in the older one.

If yours in a Rev III and Darc's is a Rev III I would replace like with like, 20bhp more in the Rev III over the Rev II N/A block.

Also the wiring is not the same nor the engine loom. Doing otherwise will be a ball ache .You should also check the ECU part numbers are the same, if not the connectors plug pinouts may be different. Not impossible to get over but adds a bit of difficulty to the exchange.

why not just replace the headgasket, shame to throw out a good engine when all it needs is a headgasket just my opinion i replaced mine almost a year ago now and its still running

Cozzy has a good point.. be much easier to just put a new head gasket on, at least then your vin plate will match the engine number and all will still be original... my rev 1 turbo engine had been replaced with a rev 2 and theres more friggin stuff wrong with it like wires not connected and pipes in funny place's etc. unless ya blow the side out of the block i'd try to avoid changing engines. just my opinion though, up to yourself lad. if you still ar'nt convinced well then go with SlipSliderg's plan, keep like with like. (rev3 with rev3) saves the hassle of getting an afm,ecu,looms etc. if any of this info is wrong i apologise.
