Quick steer pinion 12 Years, 5 Months ago Karma: 141
GROUP BUY NOW CLOSED !

Some of you may already know that in the US there is a quick steer pinion. Unfortunately it is only produced for lhd power steering Mk2 MR2s'. The quick ratio pinion modifies the stock MKII power steering housing from 3.2 turns lock to lock to a 2.6 turns lock to lock rack.

This mod has been praised in the US by just about everybody that purchased one. The pinion gives the MR2 more control when needed, but does not make it skittish.

This mod is only for the Mk2 MR2 with power steering.

The cost effective way to do this was to have two parts made to fit the existing pinion. So I will need for you to send me the RHD pinions to be modified. That means leaving it assembled. Please examine your pinion for wear and other deformities. If a pinion is sent to me and is found to be in poor condition you will be notified before conversion. If you wish to have it returned unmodified, you will be charged for shipping and handling costs.

You will receive the quick steer pinions ready assembled for installing on the MR2.

Another option I am also thinking about, is selling these on an exchange basis, but it would mean adding €120.00 to the final price. I would send a quick steer pinion to the customer. Then when the customer sends me their original power steering pinion in good condition, I would refund the €80.00 for this service . I would have to put a time limit on the return/refund so that it would speed up the process of exchange for other customer to use. There would be a limited amount of exchange pinions.

Below are the prices per unit. The more ordered, the cheaper they are per unit. Prices do not include shipping.

1/3 of the price will be required as a deposit. Once I have placed an order for production, deposits cannot be refunded immediately as my own money would be tied up in the cost.

5 - 9 units - €395.00

10 -14 units €291.00

15 – 19 units €259.00

20 – 24 units €238.00

25 -49 units €231.00

50 + units €214.00

no it means that to get full lock on your steering it takes less turns of the steering wheel. it means the steering is more responsive.. great if you are on a track. a little dangerous if you on a motorway falling asleep!

i am interested... but ummm how do i know what steering i hav?

Yes less turns lock to lock, but it is no more dangerous on ordinary roads than the standard steering, just sharper steering for the twisty stuff.

You will know if you have power steering by parking the car with the engine on and turning the steering wheel lock to lock. It should be quite easy to turn and you will be able to hear the pump working.

If anybody visits MR2 sites that are based in rhd countries would you please let them know about this possible group buy and link them to this site. Thanks.

This is at very early stages so I cannot promise anything just yet.

I have read quite a few threads about people wanting this kind of product for their rhd MR2. I am in contact with a guy in Australia that has mentioned that there could be a few potential buyers there. I'm sure there are others in the UK that would be interested. I have never done a group buy before, but I am willing to give it a go to get this product on the market.

I haven't used one but for every day use I suppose there would be less effort involved with the parking. This is mainly an upgrade to your steering alowing your steering to react faster which is what you want in a sports car. Some people in the US have gone as far as saying that this was the best modification they have done to their MR2.

Update

The pinion is in the development stage, so when this goes ahead it will be made from scratch which means it is a brand new product and you will not need to send me your current power steering pinion.

I still need more people who would be interested in this product. Even if you could not afford it right now, but maybe could in a few months please put your name down to show that you are interested in purchasing one.

I agree with you Harper, I'm hoping that we can get over 15 to make it reasonable.

Here's the part that comes out of the MR2 that would need sending to me.

Yes I tried Quaife. They were not interested in producing this product for the SW20 with power steering. That's why I am the only one offering this product for our rhd MR2's.

I have yet to remove my own pinion, but I have read that it is not too difficult to do. Below is a diagram of the power steering rack with the pinion circled in red.

I'd say I'll chance this as well Martin. I have the car in bits so I'll be able to get the pinion to you. If you're up to give me a hand with this engine some time maybe we could try and get the pinion out as well. Could take a few pics as well to help people out.

If you are competent at diy mechanics and have access to a hydraulic press then maybe it would suit you to buy the upgrade parts and assemble the pinion in your own time. This would also save you the cost of sending and return postage.

Parts on their own are as follows:

5 - 9 units - €380.00

10 -14 units €286.00

15 – 19 units €244.00

20 – 24 units €223.00

25 -49 units €216.00

50 + units €199.00
