Ok guys i have been in discussions with a company about these GPS trackers

Due to the amount of cars getting robbed

This is one of the best anti-theft and vehicle protection systems available today.

That particular model can also be wired to the alarm to ring your phone when the alarm is set off

It looks like a TK103...not sure if its the second revison (TK103-2)...they are a good tracker.

You can use pay as you go or a bill pay sim card as.

When looking for a missing car all you need to do is call it once and it will send you a text message back with the link to google maps or just the GPS latitude and longitude details, this will be the standard price of a text message which for most mobile companies is free of charge if you are on a certain tarriff. This is the option I will always advise as it is the cheapest method, and after the initial set up and playing around with the device you will only need to know a position if its lost or has been robbed, so theoretically you may never use the full amount of credit for the entire time you have the device.

Alternatively you can use this device to track in real time using online software that I will send all the guys that purchase the device and it will track the position every 30 seconds, this would be more for companies that need this as it uses the mobile broadband system but would use less than 1GB of data each month.

The simplest thing to do here would be to wire it in to a connection that would have a constant supply of power coming in to it, I suppose something similar that your alarm systems power would be wired to. It would be wired the same way as most car chargers as it has a live and ground to run the system.

The only difficulty would be wiring it up to the oil pump which is optional to do this. I would suggest one of the lads that knows the wiring of the car well to do a tutorial, maybe thats who the winner of the competition could be. A good photographic or video tutorial on the installation of the device in an mr2

and are there continues running cost's?
The only continuing costs are outlined above, there is no anual subscription as the device is self monitored rather than going through a security company.

There is also a backup battery in the device (non removable) which can last up to 48hrs in the case of the car battery being taken out.

For charging the backup battery you'll need to wire a switched and permanent live

@ greg 1973 - yip we have to get minumim of 13 or the price goes up if you add your name to the list you are commit to buy you cant pull out this is to insure that other members dont lose out. The money side of things the chap im dealing with will be back with an answer on the payment method and and end date.

Thanks Peggy - would be interesting to know what the monthly cost is though? I presume if it's pay as you go you could run out of credit and then it would not text you?

The cost per month depends on the mobile network you choose. So with someone like Vodafone.ie it would be in the region of €0.012 a month. As far as I know, you are not tied into a contract with a service provider for the GPS tracker. The tracker device tells you and you tell the gardai where the vehicle is. That is my understanding of these devices, but I could be wrong.

Worth a shot..but when I was insuring my MR2 they asked me what security it had..I said no idea? (It has alarm / immob)...they said "I'll stick it down as none it doesn't affect the policy anyway"...so there you go

....I reckon they'd want a certified installation on the tracker tbh
