Won't make the 20th John, going to Rome end of the month and need the cash for that.

Update, car is back from the bodyshop, I have the radiator in, there is a difference in size from N/A to Turbo. Turbo rad being bigger. Had a bit of grief fitting it, but she is now snug as a bug and as Toyota intended.

Forgot to get coolant, so will sort that out tomorrow and downloaded pictures to my laptop in work. Didn't get a chance to upload anything yet.

2nd prize going to Rome I suppose lol. In what way is the turbo rad bigger?

It's wider on each end by about 25mm I would say real snug fit, had to swap over the hoses as well. Off course I only found out that when I had the rad in position, had to ball ache it out again. Swapped left for right hoses and then the joy of getting the clamps tightened up at the original marking / indentation.

Done now and just need to put on a wheel arch liner and my red bumper to match the beams engine.

Other issues that have come up;
Rear left brake caliper binding, will give it a good clean down and see how she goes.

Front left; possibly bottom ball joint gone, need to check here over.

Wiring to MAF needs to be cleaned up, one wire if frayed on the original loom.

Air filter, need to make a bracket to mount it as it is flopping around at the minute.

Thanks for the comments guys, keep them coming and I am open to any suggestions people may have to improve on what they see, don't hold back.

So new radiator bracket welded in, didn’t bother getting it painted as it comes coated from the factory and will probably get broken again before it rusts. I did however sand back the rust on the chassis legs and primed them with 4 coats of primer.

Then got stuck into replacing the front arm mount, got a replacement from Anto (cheers) and got some assistance from my young apprentice.
Old

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

New

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

This lower cross member had water in it when I took a bolt out, going to leave one of the three out to let the water drain instead of being trapped and look at it end of the year. Water must be getting in one of the seams from its previous life (i.e. crashed and badly repaired.) another excuse to seam weld her up.

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

Got stuck into the radiator mounting then, again radiator was supplied by Anto for a very reasonable price. MR2 N/A radiator is smaller than the turbo version this came from, but no harm on a track car to be a bit bigger. Real pain in the ass getting it in, but all worked out in the end after I swapped over the left and right radiator hoses.

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

Nearly there.

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

And now she is all in and awaiting some coolant and the red front bumper (Anto again) matchs the redtop engine, but little else.

Re: Beams MR2 Track & Road car. 8 Years, 1 Month ago Karma: 328
Small handed apprentice is for hire at a premium rate as he is especially developed for working of Jap cars

So the coolant went in nicely, took my time and got it sorted and the fans / temp switch and cabin heater all work.

But my list just got a bit bigger, the engine is very tappety (shimmy would be a better term for it on these engines of course.) and seems to get a bit louder when hot. Checked the oil and its been there a long time hopefully an oil and filter change will clean it up. Was thinking of using thinner cheap oil for two fills and drains before putting the good stuff in.

Then looking at the air filter, it would seem I have the Beams specific SARD filter and hard pipe for the MAF. Filter is clogged and needs replaceing. So I checked the located of the bolt holes against my Apex'i cone filter and they match perfectly.

Will using this type of filter cause me issues on the Beams engine as I know they are picky on the induction side of thing. Need to build a proper bracket for mounting the air filter as well, last one was made out of galvoband and broken.

What else have we got, so far.

The power steering pump is running constant need to check that out.

Rear left brake caliper binding, will give it a good clean down and see how she goes.

Front left; possibly bottom ball joint gone, need to check her over.

Wiring to MAF needs to be cleaned up, one wire if frayed on the original loom, not an easy place to get a good fix on either

Hopefully get more done on her today

a bit.

Is their any airlocks in the system? Changing mine I had to squeeze the 2 rad hoses to
Clear the lock into the radiator on one side. Sounds like its working if the fans kicking in though

Re: Beams MR2 Track & Road car. 8 Years, 1 Month ago Karma: 328
Bit more progress yesterday, fixed up the Maf wiring and built a decent support bracket for the air filter.

Front bumper now on.

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

Need to put wheel arch liner back in.

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

Oil & filter changed, will change this again after a couple of miles of running on track.

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

Had a peek inside the flywheel inspection hatch, looks like the flywheel got some heat into it, hope things are ok in there, not going to take the gearbox out until it is a problem driving her.

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

Latest list of issues:
Top mount on coilovers are considerably worn, may need to be replaced.

The power steering pump is running constant need to check that out.

Rear left brake caliper binding, will give it a good clean down and see how she goes.

Front left; possibly bottom ball joint gone, need to check her over.

On the plus side I have found out the g/box has a Diff all be it a Torsen T2 design, transmission code S54-69A. Also found out I can lower the final drive ratio thanks to mr2.com by using the final drive from the 2ZZ gearbox, gotta love Toyota for swapping parts when you have a bit of info.

These are interchangeable.
S54 Final Drive : 4.176

C56 (7th gen gt celica and MR2 Sypder) Final Drive : 4.312

C160 (Corolla Levin BZ-R 6 speed Helical LSD) and C60 (7th Gen Celica GT-S without LSD) : 4.529

Coming along nicely

The power steering pump on constant ..have you ruled out the relay being the issue? I know mine got sticky once or twice
I've seen this issue with my gfs Saxo, new relay sorted it

Latest update nothing big, A/C is now stripped out.

Tomorrow night alarm will be removed.

Newest additions to the list of thing that need doing front engine mount is busted and needs replacing. Gearbox mount, one bolt was cross threaded, another one fixed to the bracket anyway so nothing to worry about just need to replace the bracket as it was cross threaded.

Lots of niggles with this car, but thankfully nothing serious yet, fingers crossed.

Progress is slow these days, lots of activities with family and busy with work.

Progress:
Alarm striped out.
A/C striped out.
Interior stripped (roof lining to follow)
Front engine mount replaced.

Nice work slip, i'd say she's shed a good few pounds by now.

On a more serious note... you should probably take that guy on the left to a doctor, he looks slightly off colour and as if he's gonna barf on your car.

Take the heater matrix out of it as well, its useless if you are not going to put the dash back in anyway. When its out, all you have to do is rotate a rubber hose 90 degrees in the frunk to reconnect the return pipe to the valve. You will see how easy it is when you look at it.

Keep the hazard light switch, you need it for the indicators to work correctly.

Are you putting bucket seats into it?

Yep not much point having it there and no fan, have you had any problems with the windscreen fogging up.

Going to try get rid of the airbag crap out of the car as well, if you hear a boom, I did it wrong

I will be keeping the hazard switch and chopping up the dash so I can fix the clocks to something solid. Probably mount the hazard switch it into some part of that.

I have a set of MR2 recaro's, was thinking of using them and a four point harness that I have, just need to install rear harness mounting points.

None at all, when you remove it it leaves a few holes to the frunk so air gets in and keeps things clear.

The switch just needs left plugged in, you can tidy it away behind the crash bar easily.

There is a good pre threaded mounting point on the top of the rear bulkhead behind each seat, we connected the 2 shoulder straps to the 1 point really solidly. I dont know if the Recaros have the seat belt fastener on the seat like the standard or not, but that is a good point to secure the harness on the inside lap belt. We cut the base out of the standard seats and welded it on the bottom of the buckets so we kept the rails for adjustment and this fixing point. Very handy as I am a bit short in the legs so the seat still needs to move lol.

Haven't updated this in a while but very little left to do at this stage.

Skim brake pads.
Bleed brakes.
Bleed clutch.
Replace wheel bearing or bottom ball joint or track rod end on passo side front.
(Spanky, perhaps a rattle can on the front bumper, maybe )

Big thanks to Ricky for a lovely red set of Sparco seats. Need to install them like John said with the runners from my Recaro's to get the movement working for others that may get a blast in it.

WeeJohn, do you have a pic of what way you done the hose for the heater matrix as its the last thing I need to whip out from inside the car.

Yep disc's it is, and IMO skimming the discs is grand if the car has been laid up for a while and the thickness is not less what it should be. I get it done for €40 for each of them, still cheaper than replacing them.
