Does having a good alarm and immobilisor go anyway to stopping these fellas or can they get around these easily enough?

TBH I don't think any car is unstealable but the more deterrents you have in place the less likely thieves are to take your car, they'll just find a car that's easier and quicker to steal.
So a good alarm and immobiliser will help as well as an aftermarket steering wheel lock/brace or even a detachable steering wheel.
I even know some people who disconnect their battery's at night time so there cars can't be hot wired (without the thief busting the boot/bonnet obviously).
Other things I'd recommend (I know everyone won't have these options but if you do) are...
Parking the car in a well lit area.
Not leaving the car in a "bad area" over night.
Invest in a high powered spot light for your driveway or parking spot.
Installing a CCTV camera.
And lastly a tracking device like Peggy said.
Another tip I;d have is never leave your keys in the car or leave it running, even if its just for a few seconds. There are opportunists out there just waiting for that moment so don't give it to them/
And if you do ever do this and your car is taken your insurance won't pay out either so you'll be doubly screwed!

Sometimes I think the Saudis have it spot on - let the punishment fit the crime.
Hand chopped off if caught stealing - do you think this knacker would reoffend if this law was brought in ?

I'd imagine he'd have a hard time re-offending as it's probably pretty difficult to hotwire a car with one hand

I meant he gets caught now and law comes in after he is caught. Then he gets out after doing his time. He'd have two hands but would be re-offend if he had two hands and knew this law was in place ?
Anyway, do they just cut off one hand ? not both ? pity

Your right Spidey my Da worked in Saudi Arabia for 30 years my family and i used to go over for the 3 months we had off for the summer holidays and i seen some stuff that would frighten people one woman committed adultery over there she was Saudi national they dug a hole about 30 feet deep and let the village people through rock at her then they filled in the hole with a 40 foot lorry of stone. Another instant a guy raped a woman he got his left hand cut off. A guy tried to rob a bank and i seen this they be-headed him in the centre of town for all to see some sight.

Yeah unfortunately there would be people who still steal Spidey.
Paramilitaries still shoot people up here for stealing cars and drug dealinig and it doesn't stop them. They get a thing called a 6 pack... 2 shots in the arms , 2 in the knees and 2 in the ankles and there are still people out wrecking the place.
Sure even the death sentence doesn't stop crime, some people are inherently bad and will do bad no matter what the repercussions are. In saying that the law in Ireland and the UK is far too lenient. Most scumbags get away with everything they do and if they ever do manage to do time they say its a doddle... system is a joke!

pretty rough stuff alright over there! Honestly Spidey I reckon no threat of punishment will ever stop these guys because that's all it will ever be in Ireland... a threat...
