TOPIC: Spark plug torque

Spark plug torque 10 Years, 9 Months ago Karma: 12
Hey folks,
I wanted to take out my spark plugs to inspect them. However, I read on an NGK website that it was very important they were tightened to the correct torque and I dont have a torque wrench.

Is this so or can I tighten them witby hand?

Tighten them by hand up to when you can't do it aany more, then use a rachet, don't over tighten them. A nip with a rachet should do the job i.e. 1/2 a turn or less probably. It can be a hard thing to guage unless you have done it a couple of times, but don't be fightened to be looser rather than tighter.

As Slip says it takes a bit of feel. On new plugs there is a crush washer that does what it name suggests and crushes to help with the seal. If you tighten them up using an extension bar without the ratchet until they are hand tight, you can give them another half turn with a ratchet and they will be sweet.

Try to not go over 1/4 and you'll be grand. 1/2 to tighten is a bit too much
Make sure that groove in engine head for plug steel washer is clean from any dirt before throwing back plugs.
