TOPIC: Turbo Swap costs?

Turbo Swap costs? 10 Years, 5 Months ago Karma: 58
Hi everyone,

I'd like to have an idea of how much a Turbo Swap would cost for a 98 MR2?
I had a Turbo swap done to a 91 MR2 before and there were a lot more parts to complete the swap than just the engine. Would someone here please give me an idea of cost and parts I should be expecting to buy in addition to the Engine and Transmission?

Thanks.

Your best bet would be to get a donor car and swap everything straight out.
You need the engine, gearbox, turbo, downpipe, exhaust, intercooler, ecu with wiring loom, drive shafts etc.
Are you looking to do the swap yourself or are you getting someone to do it for you?
Here is a decent guide/ how to on the swap.

Thanks for the detailed response, I'd rather have someone with experience do it and if I do a turbo swap it would have to be with a 245 HP engine (95+ I believe).

There really isn't much difference between the earlier rev 1/2 engines, and the rev3 engines in the real world - albeit, you'll pay probably an extra £500 for a later engine with an extra 20bhp - value for money, no!

If you can find a donor car cheap enough, go for it, I can do a conversion in 2-3 days with a belt/pump overhaul

That said, it is much easier to just sell your na, and buy a turbo car

If a non-Japanese import MR2 n/a has a engine swap for a 3sgte engine (all turbos are imports), is it still classed as a non-import ?

Could be a loophole for cheaper insurance.

I wouldn't even try and pull a fast one with insurance. The chassis will always be either UK or import, but the engine conversion will HAVE to be declared. A converted car, is likely to cost more to insure, than a factory turbo - regardless of whether it's an import or UK chassis.

I think given the lack of rev 3 turbo cars out there, the only way is to find a nice late na and transplant a decent engine.

Then you're sure the engine , turbo and clutch etc are fine before it goes in.

Having said that I've just done the opposite but if I had the time. . . . .

Something I would consider if I was going to stick a 3sgte in there, before it goes in renew the timing belt, hose from hell and clutch.

Best thing to do is buy a crashed 94+ turbo which will have everything and do the swap yourself, all you will need is an engine crane, pallets and basic tools, its simple.
Or you can just buy a turbo mr2 because buying everything seporate will be too expensive.
