TOPIC: Failed NCT on exhaust noise

Failed NCT on exhaust noise 9 Years, 2 Months ago Karma: 3
Well finally got around to doing the NCT and to my amazement all I failed on was exhaust noise, number plates and a bulb! The last two I think I can handle but don't know what to do about the noise. Its a rev 2 turbo with a decat and a pretty huge single cannon. To be fair to the NCT lads it is ridiculously loud and has bothered me for a while. When they were doing the noise test you could feel the vibrations through the wall!

Is there any way I can quieten the exhaust that won't have an adverse effect on performance? Dunno if I'm a fan of the chicken wire and steel wool method but is there any other way? I've seen those baffles that you screw into the the can but they look like they would be very restrictive , not to mention daft lookin!

Alternatively does anyone have an exhaust for sale that would pass the NCT. I'd prefer not to go back to stock and twin exit would be better, single would do as long as its quiet enough though.

Cheers lads

Will this reduce power though? Looks very restrictive

Man all you can do is shove a load of steel wool in the exhaust and buy that silencer to stop the steel wool flying back out when you put the foot down.
You will defo pass the NCT that way but u will be down on power you cant have the best of both worlds.
It can never be too loud.
Check this out might be a good idea

I've been messing with a dB meter, and found a cut out to be the best way, and have a blanking plate in reserve for superquiet (i have a V6 conversion on my Mk2)

Its 1/2 open at the end of this vid:

and you can pick the kits up on ebay for $99 or less

I've ordered a baffle anyway, see how it goes. Really interested in the cutout idea, I had been thinking about something like it before but didn't realise they were so readily available. Would be deadly, the best of both worlds! Cheers lads:)

Still on the lookout for a new exhaust if anyone has one they want to shift!

I have read a lot of positive reviews about the Berk exhaust.

Just to update this thread in case anyone has the same issue in the future, I fitted a baffle similar to the one linked above and it did the job so NCT passed:) Shame I have to do it all again in January!

on the subject of sounds, here's the current state of mine and I like it (can shut down the vacuum actuated bypass valve when I want) .. the V6 bolted up to the MR2 S54 gearbox going well, got back from Le mans last week, didn't miss a beat
