Christmas dinner 2010 - ideas only 1 Year, 6 Months ago Karma: 196
I know it seems like a long way off but I have already posted up on the MR2OC for people to register for the Christmas dinner.

The date is Sunday 5th December.

I want to see what ideas anyone has for where to go etc etc.

one idea I have is along the lines of what was originally planned for the 1st anniversary. Head somewhere towards Galway or at least central towards central/west so that everyone can come and no one has an excuse.

Secondly we could do an overnighter. Have the Christmas dinner in the evening followed by a few pints.

Any thoughts?

The reason I am posting this in the middle of the summer is that it gives people plenty of time to plan but more importantly, we can get the best prices for overnight accommodation if we decide to got hat way.

If you decide an overnighter, here’s a few ideas of self catering places that I’ve been to for Christmas Parties. I'd prefer to stay overnight so could have a few beers. How romantic to spend our wedding anniversary with mr2.ie

Sounds great Spanky. If we are talking central for everyone, what about Athlone?

Good for North, South, East and West.

That's as good a way to pick as any IMO.

Quick search brought this up (as a guide only)

www.creggancourt.com/athlone.htm

€60 b&b for one night in a single room.

Plenty of time to sort but I thought that, if we make a call on location, we can book the rooms or even negotiate a rate (usually need 10 people min to get any sort of discount)

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, Wouldn't you Like to Know!!! Well a Suprise is what it says it is............ A FRIGGIN SUPRISE, JUST WAIT AND SEE!!! But I promise you it'll be a Good one!!
I do however Suggest that if Nobody has any Objections that everyone give a Few Bob each that could go towards Spot Prizes, Treats etc.... on the Night?! I could open up a savings account for all to View online and keep a record of who's given what??!!!!

Re:Christmas dinner 2010 - ideas only 1 Year, 3 Months ago Karma: 165
Okay, over the last 6 months, I've found that the 80/20 rule applies to MR2.ie, like everything else.

No matter how many members we have, it will be a core group that keep it going and go to meets etc.

Some will join the core group, some will drift in and out.

And this is fine - people have different lives and they all don't fit in to our MR2.ie meets calendar.

When I thought about a Christmas meet, I thought maybe, for this time, its a little more about meeting the people - but of course also seeing the 2s. This worked in Athlone - was great craic meeting the people and we had some time in/looking at the 2s.

So, my suggestion for a Christmas night out is Dublin - easy to get to - tons of hotels (and cheaper than a lot of the rest of the country e.g. basic TravelLodge room only 27 euro each pps - twin room). Cheap transport in/out of city centre and good choice for meals, pubs etc.

Some may say that its not really a run - but I think we can have lots more runs in the nicer weather. Plus, we can have an on-spec run on the Sunday morning.

And, we've moaned for years and now we finally have about 5 or 6 good roads So, getting to Dublin is relatively easy for most people. Most members would be within 2.5 hours max of Dublin. I know that to give up a weekend is a big commitment for some, especially with kids etc. So, having it in Dublin means that most people are only 2.5 hours MAX from Dublin - meaning peoplpe don't have to leave til about 2.30/3pm. So, people still have their Sat morning free for whatever commitments. And the same on the Sunday. If we go for a short spin and finish up around 1/2pm, people are still home for 4ish, leaving your Sunday evening free.

What do people reckon ?

Sounds good to me, in theory.

My problem is (and I am not looking for sympathy ) I have a busy 2011 already:

1 week snowboarding in winter
3.5 weeks in Florida in spring
Weekend @ LeMans for 24 hour race in June
1 week in Cyprus in autumn for Wedding
+ normal car expenses incl. MOT in Jan

I hate my life

I need to raid the piggy bank as it is, but if I can afford it I will be there

If we can set a date I will update the event notification on MR2OC to hopefully boost numbers

Unfortunately December is the most expensive month of the year for us so I cant join you guys for an overnighter.

The most I could stretch is £30 for fuel and a fiver for lunch so if there is a run like last December when we met up near Carlingford, I'd be up for it

Thats the way the Athlone overnighter panned out. Some came along for the afternoon meet (and stayed a few hours longer than planned ) and then some stayed on for the night. Worked out well.
