Another new engine! 1 Year, 6 Months ago Karma: 44
okay so you all may know now the Car is acting up again on me so IVI said they would replace the engine, What I would like to know is whether or not to see if a Turbo engine would be a better try this time round?
Can it be done in an N/A?

To put a turbo in you engine bay you will need a shopping list something similar to mine.

1. Engine.
2. Turbo.
3. Rear wiring clip.
4. Turbo Gearbox.
5. Drive shafts.
6. Exhaust down pipe.
7. Exhaust tail pipe.
8. ECU
9. IC piping

Etc, Etc,

Its no simple job, though well within the capabilities of IVI or one of their fitters, however a rear clip (i.e. the above list) is circa £2500 and well in excess of what the cost of a N/A rev II engine would be as a warranty replacement.

Easier Said than Done! I love my Lil' Blue Mo Mo!!
I'd want approx €3,000 to €3,500 to help me afford a Turbo and I know I'd never get near that for her. I do however think that with a Brand new Nct, Tax and a New engine with a Warranty would help me Enormously!

Hate to rain on the parade folks but.........

When I was 2 shopping, I came across the nicest 2 I had EVER seen. Absolutely mint, one of kind, with so much tasty and classy things done to it. The guy had sunk in over 7K and was then selling for 1500. I wanted it really bad but wanted a turbo more.

SO...

I called IVI and asked how much it would cost to do a tubby conversion.

NO...

They won't do it.

He told me in no uncertain terms that they will replace an N/A engine in an N/A car and replace a Turbo engine in a turbo car, but no conversions. Too costly in time and expense for them, plus, I got the impression they were busy, doing well, and more interested in quick turnover, easy money projects.

Maybe you could find someone else that will do it, but your history and the cover for this project is with IVI so no dice there.

You could always ask them again, things may have changed, but this was only like 5-6 months ago.

Yeah I guess you're Right as usual!!!!!!!! But a Girl's gotta Dream!!
I think i'll just NCT her 3 months earlier, giving her 27 months test, Tax her till the end of the year and Sell her on with the 3 months Warranty which in my eyes is a Bloody good Deal. Not many private sales offer that with a sale, plus she'll have a new Timing belt and clutch and Shocks were only done 3 months ago!
So it'll be mid Oct before she goes up for sale!
Any idea what kinda Money I could look for??

You might want to check the cost of insurance for a turbo MR2,it can be quite expensive.

That's a good price increase (if you can say an increase is good) for the extra performance that you will have. What company did you get the quote from ?

I got my turbo conversion from a guy called Shahid near Bradford.

I'll give him a shout and see what sort of price he's able to do it for.

Even with flight and ferry etc, it will be a lot cheaper than getting it done over here. His motto is "I can't be beaten on price".

And he knows MR2s like the back of his hand. I dropped my MR2 (NA at the time) to him one Sat morning and before I was on my flight back that afternoon, he had the NA engine out and was getting the turbo clip back in. So, he works fast. I left it for a week - not because he needed a week but because he said if somthing came up where he had to go to Toyota and he s waiting on a part, that would give him plenty of time.

I'll get back to you as soon as he lets me know.

For myself and dshamrock, there was no difference between N/A and Turbo, insurance wise. Same.

Okay, Shahid got back to me. He said "Let me know what quote they get and I'll beat it ".

So, my basic swap cost me £1750 - that was rear clip + exhaust + labour. Approx 2200.

As Ray said - you'll pay 2500 easy for a rear clip over here. Plus I'd say 1000 easy in labour.

Let me know if you're interested.

That's a bloody good deal, even when you factor in flights and ferry etc it's still a lot more money in your pocket!

I actually got him to do a few other jobs while the engine was going in.

So, on top of the £1750 for everything, I got timing belt done (£40+VAT + 30 fitting) - so, about 100 euros for timing belt supplied and fitted. Can't go wrong with that I think I paid 400 euros labour for the timing belt before. And the

I also got an uprated fuel pump fitted - I supplied it. He fitted it for only £50.
