My MR2 has standard Toyota shocks with lowering springs. Id say they are in it a few years and ill probably be changing them myself over the next few months. I had Coilovers in my 2nd last car (Altezza) and found them comfortable enough. To be honest there isnt much difference between coilovers & normal shocks with lowering springs except with coilovers you can adjust the height and how hard or soft you want them. A good set of Uprated shocks with good lowering springs will perform just as good for Road driving but if your planning on taking your car on the track, then its worth investing in Coilovers. Im probably going to put koni or bilisten shocks in mine & a new set of lowering springs, unless i can get a set of coilovers cheaper, which i doubt!

I think you'll be hard pushed finding cheaper (especially in coilovers). For uprated shocs/springs I would recommend trying www.camskill.co.uk or www.fensport.co.uk

Not a fan of coilover myself, but if thats your thing then I would recommend the TEIN and make sure you get the correct spring ratings. My mate has ran them on his scooby for about two years now and they are still working well. (Road, Track & Drag use)
Next up, get proper adjustable camber bolts, and the blocks that lower the swinging arm such as the ones DB8 (I think that is his username)was selling on a post recently.
Then once you have all the parts together, get it all setup geo wise, fourwheel alignment, damping rates, camber, then drive the car for a couple of weeks and see what improvements you might like after your break in period. If your talking to the right people they will be able to translate your requests into alterations to all aspects of the setup to best suit your style of driving.
You get what you pay for, if you want to drop it low for looks then the info above doesn't matter just my advice.

only their reputation (as ricky has said) they are apparently hard as the road ... literally.
Dont listen to me though, I paid considerably more than that for brand new stock shocks and springs in my car. They are (in my opinion) hard to beat if not the best for normal road driving. I think the only reason the standard setup isn't preferred by a lot of people is because it performance is measured on 10-20 year old parts which are usually knackered.
Some of the other drivers at the highland drive were pleasantly surprised at how good my standard shocks, springs and wheels held the road round some very twisty roads, better than theirs sometimes
If its down to research and development then you have to assume Toyota spent more time and money researching the setup than Tein or BC ... food for thought I think. That said, a lowered setup is preferred by some for looks. Each to their own basically.

+1, but I did some mild upgrades to keep up with you Spanky.
If your going low or racing, get the coilovers. At that price I would be looking around to see who in Ireland can service them, strip them down and rebuild them before I would part with the cash.
If you are looking to drive with most wheels on the ground at the same time, on normal roads then get new topmounts, springs and shocks as Spanky said.
I had Apex'i N1 spec coilovers on the car when I bought it and they were great at insane speed on any road. But the drive at normal and high road speeds was drastic to say the least.

Worse than that, I dumped them, could have been handy for the up and coming build
WTF? Where they knackered? I hope they were, you dont dump shit like that!
That could have been a bargain for someone and also a few squids for your good self!

Bc coilovers arent hard at all, to be honest, they were so nice, you would have hardly have know that anything was changed whatsoever. Apart from the change in handling, which was brilliant and the ride height.
Just my two cents, and ive sat and drove a lot of cars with a lot of differing brands of coilovers and different shock and spring set ups.
