The speaker cables will be in pairs of the same colour with one of them having a black line. You should have 4 pairs (assuming your car had a standard stereo system) and I think some of the colour are light green, light purple, grey and possibly white but I wouldn't be 100%.

The colour they wont be are red, black, blue as these are used for power or switching cables.

Connect the speakers up one at a time. Using your fader and balance controls you should be able to work it out by process of elimination.

Yeah that guide is bang on, but that is only if you have a UK/Irish car. That colour coding is EU.

If you have a Jap car, you're in a spot of bother. Its doable, but much more tricky. Their colour coding is completely different and there is no sense to it. There are no colour coded pairs which are obviously speakers. They are all different colours with different stripes etc. There is a red and a yellow etc, but they could be RR+ FL-.
The
only way to wire Jap cars (I had to do this with mine as it was a butchers bollox in there when I had a look) is with an auto (12V) phase tester and find your live and battery. The hard part is knowing which is which and harder still is getting your ground and electric aerial. Speakers can be found as Spanky said by process of elimination by using fade and balance.

Best thing to do is search for a jap car stereo wiring diagram, particularly for an MR2 if you can. Hopefully that will ID everything for you and make it easier.

I bought a modern ISO block in Halfords (all stereos are ISO now) and fitted that to the original wiring harness. Now I can swap out stereos to my hearts content in a matter of minutes. Plug and play.

I recommend, if you are any good at soldering, to solder the connections properly and use heat shrink. You will get a permanent, neat, clean and reliable job.

Good luck.

I wired a stereo on a Jap Mr2 recently and I used these two guides from the "Know your 2" section of the MR2OC website

www.mr2oc.co.uk/know-your-2/mk2/interior...ve-audio-system.html

www.mr2oc.co.uk/know-your-2/mk2/interior...-wiring-colours.html

It seemed to work ok.

Good find Eamo.

I extracted the info out of the first link in case people cant read or have to register etc. The extracted text is in bold.

This is for wiring a stereo in to a Jap import.

Speakers

* Yellow / Black / Red / Aqua / Pink / White / Purple / Blue
* Front Passenger speaker: Pink + Purple -
* Front Drivers speaker: Aqua + Blue -
* Rear Passenger speaker: Yellow + Black -
* Rear Drivers speaker: White + Red -

Power wires:

* Grey ---- This is a switched Ignition +12v
* Blue/Yellow ---- This is a constant +12v
* Brown ---- This is an Earth

Electric aerial command wires

* Black/RED ---- This needs connecting to your stereos ATT (The wire that goes live when the radio is switched on)
* Pink/Blue ---- This needs connecting to the switched ignition +12v

Green ---- This is the auto dim command wire and goes to 12 volts when the side lights are switched on. It is the feed from the side lights/instrument illumination. If you test it with a multimeter it will show as an earth but if you switch sidelights on it shows 12v. A hint - if checking for earth connections, also check for voltage with the lights on as the lamp filament is very low resistance less than 1 ohm. This connection will happily act as an earth until you turn on your lights when it promptly blows the sidelight fuse. Use this only if your head unit supports the display dim function

That's basically it. It's very vague I know, it's mainly for people like me that struggled with making the electric aerial go up and down.

The fuses that might be blown in the process are:

* Constant +12v "Dome" fuse
* Ignition +12v "Rad & Cig" Fuse
* Ignition +12v ECU - IG" Fuse

I had a little trouble with my electric aerial as there are two wires for the aerial (you can see above, black and red and the pink and blue. What I did was connect the two of them together and then connect them to the blue cable on the ISO harness that I fitted on. This works perfectly, aerial goes up and down as the radio is turned on and off.

DWDAVE, give me a shout if you have any trouble. PM me with your questions and if you need to, I can give you my number and you can give me a shout.

My 2 came with the colours as the link I posted. A previous owner must have fitted an EU/ISO harness after import as there is a connection between the car wiring and the stereo connection.

Good guide though Swag ... you should post it in a How 2

BTW the two switched 12V signal are for aerial and amp. Some head units will contorl them separately as the amp is always required but it will only put the aerial up if the radio is selected. Slightly unnecessary IMO but that's the reason for the two 12V switched outputs

Cheers Spanky, but I extracted that from someones elses. Maybe Ill do one in my own wording later on or something.

My aerial would not work without connecting the two "aerial" wires together. Im not running any amps, no need with the sound im getting from the Alpine speakers, awesome. Although, I would like a bit more punch, so might add in a sub/amp down the road.

Good one chief, I asked for that I suppose

Right, did up a How Two on wiring in a stereo / ISO harness on your recommendation.
