Help -clutch problem ! 1 Year, 6 Months ago

Went out in the 2 this morning and all was fine. Got back into the car and tried to put in reverse and it would not go in - could hear gears crunching.
So, tried other gears and none would go in.
Turned engine off and I was able to put gear shifter into any gear.
Any help appreciated
TIA
Rob

Badness. Maybe the master clutch cylinder or slave cylinder has gone.
Have you tried bleeding the clutch.
Hope this helps but then again i'm a novice so I could be totally "Pete Tong".

cylinders and cable would be the first to check. After that I would phone Ray or Ricky for advice
Someone posted on MR2OC recently with a similar problem but I haven't been able to find it. Will post a link once I do

+1 your clutch is not disengaging (not clearing)cheak fluid level first then try to bleed the clutch keeping an eye on the fluid level.
PS Use brake fluid

Yeah, since I got it, its always been noisy and when reversing etc, it sometimes catches and I have to disengage and go again. So, I had been thinking it wasn't disengaging fully but it held and I just said I'd live with the noise.
So, maybe its time to bite the bullet and get a new one and sort it out properly.

Noise not good (squealing ?) mite be the bearing hard to say with out hearing it check fluid and the slave cylinder is working its on the gearbox just incase + check for fluid leaking

It was more of a rattling noise - when it was disengaged, it went away. So, I could hear it at idle with the clutch out. When in gear, it also went away (althoug, that could have been that the noise wasn't audible over engine.
Anyway, now that noise is hardly audible - adding to theory hat its not fully disengaged.
Its definitely not leaking but I'll check and bleed it during the week.

Got back out to the car this evening and put it in gear with engine off and started it and it started fine and was then able to change fine.
So, I just saved myself 600+ quid on a clutch change. What will I buy now with that money that I just saved

Wow that's weird Rob.. Maybe it's something like the seal in your master cylinder. Maybe check the carpet underneath your clutch pedal to see if there's any leaking fluid there.

Yeah, I'll check it later. I think either way, its a sign to get the clutch sorted in the next while.
I'll talk to TDP and Couture and see what sort of prices they are quoting.

Are you getting any burning smell from the car. I got that from my Audi before I brought it in to be repaired. 'm recovering from the shock of the cost of replacing the tch and flywheel on my Audi A4 1.8T. It has only 20k miles on the clock and it cost 2400 including a service!!!!

No, its actually working fine. Yesterday was a once-off.
Having said that, the release bearing noise is/was driving me mad.
I'm hoping I can get an aftermarket clutch supplied and fitted for under 700. Thats getting clutch for 350 euros and another 350 euros to fit. Sound reasonable ? I'm assuming about 4 hours work to someone who knows the 2 - 90 euro per hour max.

That's pretty reasonable Ricky.
Spidey, hopefully you could have the job done for in an around the 500 mark.
Give Couture a call and even get an indicitive price for now, so you can budget accordingly.

Caution on buying Exedy through ebay. I've heard there are Exedy replicas that sell on there, and there is a difference between them and the real deal... Not saying that one is not legit, just pointing out buyer beware

In that case I'd just buy ADL blueprint or unpart clutch can't see them being much more

Unless the ebay seller can provide proof that it's a genuine part?

Sorry - forgot to mention - the one I was pricing was a RPS Sport which could hold about 380ft/lb.
I bought a clutch from eBay before but it was after a lot of research. I think the user is AimcoClutch - rating is 100% with 28000+ feedback And I checked them out on other forums etc.
But, as Quandry said - beware of buying "important" parts via ebay - do your research first !

Don't forget to get a clutch release bearing as well, sorry if that is a stupid statement.

Yeah, I noticed when looking at clutch kits recently, that not all manufacturers/kits include one.
