Shark fin aerials anyone ? 2 Years ago

My radio isn't working at the mo and was going to see whats up.
Then I thought about loosing the stock aerial and using one of those shark-fin aerials. Now, because I've a soft-top, I can't stick it in the usual place on top.
So, I was wondering if anyone knew if they need to be on tpo to function properly ? I listen to mp3's mostly, so I wouldn't be looking to pick up tons of stations - just the few strongest local stations.
Could I locate a shark-fin aerial someowhere hidden but still exposed in the front bumper ?
I was also thinking to place one (if I can get a very small one) somewhere along middle of windscreen cowl ? With it located here, wiring is easy to get to the head unit.

A lot of modern cars have a thin metal strip running down the centre of the windscreen. It might be possible to get something like that that just glues itself to the inside of the window. I don't know if you even retro fit something like that but if so I'd say it'd be the best option

I think my first 2, a G-limited, had one of those windscreen aerials.
My rev1 gltd had one in the front screen and it worked well

as far as i know as an option you could get the premium sound system which included an am aerial antenna running down the center of the windscreen, im sure something could be rigged up from there . think it was an option on the whole range as the girlfriends rev2 gt has one and my rev3 gts maybe source a replacement windscreen

I've not actually listened to my radio since August ! So, just looking for a quick, cheap fix.
I might try that aerial Mark posted. And if quality isn't great, might look at the windscreen option.

Not 100% sure til I get it but hoping to put it down at the bottom of the windscreen. Must actually go back out to the car and look but I reckon there is plenty of space down there ?

I think the shark fin aerials on BMWs etc are more for mobile phone reception rather than radio (read it somewhere but cant remember where).
There is a relatively easy fixed aerial replacement you can do in place of the old stock electric one. Someone on the OC done it. Basically just fit a standard adjustable aerial and use the adjustable nature of it to get your screw on mast vertical. simples!! (the link below is in the paid members area so some may not be able to see it)

I'm going to try the on I've ordered and if quality isn't good, I might try that idea. If it does work out, i'm intending to smooth over th aerial hole, as I'll be going for the toms duckbill and smooth, clean look.

I'm thinking of giving it a go on mine. My aerial motor has given up so it is currently disconnected.
Like you I usually listen to CD or MP3 so I don't miss it to much but sometime you want to turn the radio on as well.
I am tempted to get my current aerial part way up and then disconnect the power to it.
As it current sits, it will rise OK but only goes down if you slap it (oo er!!).
The cheap mods are always the best

Ok, I took out the aerial and opened up the motor, The toothed rod has broken, So I take it i'd be aswell to order a whole new aerial rather than looking or trying to repair the toothed rod?

Got the aerial I ordered this morning.
took stereo out and plugged it in and I was able to get fm104, q102 no problem (only stations I tried so far) with the aerial just sitting on my lap.
So, I started to route the wiring an aerial under the steering column, so that I could go back up near drivers door and onto the windscreen. But, as I was moving the aerial under the steering column, I noticed that the signal was still perfect.
So, my new "windscreen" aerial is currently tucked away under the steering column

Spidey, have you considered positioning the Shark Fin dead centre on the boot lid?
I doubt the aerial has to be at the highest point of the car to get good reception, obviously the higher the better, but I think the boot lid would be fine AND look pretty sleek. I would have it painted to match of course!

The one I went for in the end was the same as the pic Mark posted. If I went for the Sharkfin, I'd def try the bootlid - with me having no wing, I agree, it'd look good.
