TOPIC: Cutting out on idle (sometimes)
#5847
Cutting out on idle (sometimes) 1 Year, 12 Months ago Karma: 56
Well this past week the car has been idling lower and lower until today it started cutting out on me. It would only cut out as I was coming to a stop at a red light or junction for example after I'd depressed the clutch. It was slightly hesitant in starting up once but I've started it a few times since and it's been OK.

Anyone any ideas what I should be looking for? Oil level is normal and it has had an oil, filter and plug change within the last 4 thousand miles. Think I might just get the parts together and do a full service sometime. Dizzy cap and rotor arm haven't been changed in a while...maybe leads?

Did you change anything recently or right before this started happening?

Thats the thing, I've not done anything to it at all. It was going great over Christmas but in the last few days things have been going wrong. Its not raining up here although that never caused anything before.

Yip sure have and no error codes are coming up. I'm going to give it to a mechanic sometime soon to have a look at it. In the mean time I'm just driving it less frequently...

right do leads dizzy and rotor. has the lights been coming on the dash as the revs dropped if so it may be down to the alternator not charging. another cos as happend in friends civic i know different makes but the throttle body was dirty and revs were eratic one min at idle reving to 2k then settle other times droping to nearly 600 and cutting out. or simple as you got dirty fuel. do you use the same petrol station or mix and match?

More randomness today. The temperature guage is going bonkers now too. I'm thinking its the thermostat as no hot air was coming out of the vents even though the temperature control was fully to the hot side...the temp gauge would start to climb then all of a sudden the hot air would come on and the temp gauge would shoot back to just about a quarter up before settling at just below halfway.

So thats thermostat, engine mounts, clutch, speakers, ariel, fog lights and suspension bushings I have to sort out...all while being broke as a broke thing! Loan time or maybe time to put the car off the road...saying that I've just spunked €600 odd quid on tax for the year!

Anyone know the cheapest place for engine mounts, thermostats and bushings? I already have a cluth just waiting to get the engine mounts before doing the both...

Just to give a bit of closure to this thread I found out what the problem was. The heater matrix pipes going under the car and above the petrol tank were perished. Rang Toyota and they quoted me close to €500 for the pipes! Luckily I spoke to Tim at TBDevelopments and he suggested replacing the pipes with lengths of good quality rubber hose. This has the advantage of being much much cheaper and comes with the added benefit of never having to replace them again! *touch wood*

I thought it was the thermostat or radiator at first but there was coolant running down from under the fuel tank. Hopefully getting it sorted this Thursday. Will let you guys know how I get on...

Right well looks like I have things nearly sorted. My mechanic has been working on it from Tuesday and he's still not finished although he did take yesterday off! He say's he's never touching another MR2 again! His hands and arms are cut to pieces. It's driven him back to the drink! He had to take almost all of the underside of the car off, fuel tank out, hand brake cables off, etc. On the plus side I have my new engine mounts and Walbro fuel pump in! Its going to cost me a fortune though

Got my car back today. Expensive fix for just 2 pipes but I got my fuel pump sorted and have my engine mounts in. The polybush engine mounts are really good! They do increase the vibrations in the cabin but its not that bad. I actually like it. Makes the car seem more raw. Its amazing being back in my own car again after a month of driving diesels!
