My 2 has had pretty rough gear shifting lately, poor going in to gear and out of gear. I have ordered a few new shifter bushes from Toyota and hope to get them next week, but I also think that my gearbox has some trotters independent trading transaxle oil in it.

I just put Redline MT-90 in my tranny today and holy crap all i have to say about this stuff is that its made out of pure magic. Before, i HAD to heel-toe and rev-match to downshift around turns (or wait for the revs to fall all the way) and now the shifting is smother and I can downshift when I wanna! its pretty sweet. highly recommend this product! :thumbup

I've been using MT90 for over 30k miles. Has worked fine for me and it improved shift quality significantly (but it takes a couple days for it to get worked into all the bearings). It is a GL4 fluid which is the most appropriate fluid to use. MTL is pretty much the same but slightly thinner, as far as I know. My car has 377,000 miles on it and as far as I know it's the original transaxle.

The Redline agent for Ireland is Courture Auto. I am going to give them a call tomorrow to see if they have any in stock. Anyone else know where it is available in case Courture don't have stock?

it'll work out at about 80 euro for just the oil! i was gonna get this in the other week but just didnt have the cash. i got my bushings from a guy on IMOC, £4 including shipping. lovely little metal ones with a rotating centre so there is no strain. very nifty. huge difference

I have got the metal bushings as well, its an improvement.

When was the gearbox oil change last Geoff and how many miles on the box. I have found a fluid change to be helpful in curing this problem.

If you think the MT 90 is to expensive, my gearbox specialist mate recommends putting in ATF the minute you feel any difficulty changing gear.

I use the Toyota stuff, the MR2 gearbox has brass synchro's and I believe some types of fluid when operating creates sulphuric acid and eats the brass away, thus making the problem even worse.

That is internet based knowledge I don't know how true it is, but something to consider in researching what to use.

I made a noticable difference. Changing up or down is very slick and easy. I'm not convinced its worth the money but it isn't something that is changed very often so why not buy the best. You need 4 quarts for a rev3 tubby gearbox with LSD.

I bought mine from Oilman - Opie oils. These guys usually have decent offers advertised through the OC website. Delivery can be expensive to N or S Ireland. But the exchange rate definitely works in your favour ...

4 quarts (MT90 GL5) bought and delivered to a N Ireland addy would be £65 = €70 (delivered direct to S Ireland would be £5/€5.50 more). If you could get group together the delivery costs would be insignificant.

There are also different grades of MT90 for LSD and non and different GL ratings. I was told that MT90 GL5 was the right one for mine. Opie can advise if needs be.

Check with GWrinkle, I think he is buying some MT90 as well.

Thanks guys, they had GL4 but said it was suitable so I picked up some today so will see how that goes. I have some of those shifter bushings upstairs and will get my under plate parts from Toyota next week. Hopefully at the end of this exercise I should have a reasonable shift and who knows maybe I don't need to change my clutch after all.

Well I put the Redline in the gearbox this morning. Was quite an epic and glad I had my eldest there to hold the filler hose. I knew it wasn't going to be easy so I bought a couple of things in Halfords thinking either one would work:

1. Flexi spout filler

2. Jiggle Siphon

I needed both! The jiggle siphon was good for getting the oil out of the bottle and in to the gearbox, although I needed to cut the bottle a bit to be able to fit the jiggle siphon feed in to it - redline gave it a tiny spout!

So then I used the flexi spout filler and the other bottles of redline to top up the first bottle that was being used by the siphon. All in all it worked a treat, although we did have a couple of minor oil spills due to being a touch over keen on the refilling :blush:

I put in four bottles of redline (about 3.6litres) and it just dropped a little out of the filler at the end. I did notice however that we only had 3.2litres in the bottles in the end so it might have been a touch low in the gearbox.

I didn't get to drive the car yet as I'm still doing other jobs on it but I hope this will help the shift action a bit. Hopefully I will get my gearshift parts this week also and should be a different car by next weekend :cheer:
