Recently purchased a new car and, despite hoping to hold on to my MR2, head will have to rule over heart at some stage...
I bought this car in May 2010 and it has been my daily driver since then, therefore I have kept it very well maintained. It hasn't let me down in that time, covering 50,000 miles over the course of my ownership. The clock currently stands at 173,000 which is low for a 22 year old car and from what I can tell these 3SGE engines just keep going.
It is a (very) early 1992 Revision 1 MR2, GTi 16 n/a with no p/s.
Good Bits
Full FSH from my ownership. Previous owner was a fellow MR2.ie member.
Oil change/service carried out every 6k
New alternator, thermostat.
Front shocks and exhaust flexi-pipe replaced for last NCT
Timing belt done in Feb 2012 @ 152k
All mechanical work carried out by qualified Toyota mechanic, 20 years experience at Toyota main dealer in Cork
Full leather interior
New double DIN JVC CD player
OEM stainless steel sill plates
Momo steering wheel
Refurbed 15'' alloys
Removable glass sunroof that can be stowed in the 'frunk'
Bodywork excellent overall
Currently NCT'd until 31-12-14! Passed NCT Saturday 16th November
Taxed until 02-14
Car is currently insured on a classic policy for 150 euro per year from Brophy's Portlaoise.
Overall the car is in as close as possible to original condition, which is rare for an MR2. The only real cosmetic 'mods' as such are the leather interior (came out of a turbo MR2), sill plates and the Momo steering wheel. I still have the original steering wheel but it's absolutely massive so I rarely use it! The car came with 14 inch Rev1 alloys but these were replaced by the previous owner with the far better 15'' version.
Bad Bits
There is a bit of paint fade on the front bumper. It's more noticable in photos than in the metal but it is something I would be looking at getting sorted if I was keeping the car.
One small dent under the petrol cap
The accellerator sticks when not pressed so you need to tap it slightly sometimes to get it to budge. Apparently a common fault and not dangerous by any means, just a bit annoying at times.
Rip in the cushion of the drivers seat, some slight bolster wear.
I honestly can not think of anything else...but then I love this car so find it hard to think bad thoughts about it!
The car is insured, taxed and tested so I'm not too pushed on selling it. I won't be giving it away but it deserves to be driven more regularly than I will be able to. It has been an excellent car for me and would make a great daily driver for plenty more years I'm sure.
