Oil in spark plug wells (Mk2 MR2 3SGE) 8 Years, 2 Months ago

Guys what am I looking at here? was giving the car a service and while checking the spark plugs I noticed wells 1 and 4 had oil in it - 4 having a lot more oil than 1
I cleaned it up and other than the engine being a bit smokey when it was first started presumably because a wee bit of oil got in.
Other than changing the 2 fouled plugs - I assume the issue is with a seal somewhere? I done a 20km run earlier and the wells are still clean. I assume if it was a seal issue it would have breached again
I'd rather fix the issue than forking out on some new iridium plugs

It appears the culprit is usually the valve cover gasket
I guess that and 4 new plugs are this months shopping bill

+1, sound like you need to replace your rocker cover gasket, easy enough job

Just onto Mr.T just there -
Costs a not so pricey €22 for both gaskets - hopefully these will last 15 years!
Changing out all 4 of the Iridium plugs although keeping the centre 2 as a backup as they weren't fouled - Shame as I only got 25k miles out of them
FYI Part no for 99 Rev 5
11213 GASKET, CYLINDER HEAD COVER
11213-88460
11214 GASKET, CYLINDER HEAD COVER, NO.2

Finally got around to this!
Been dormant a while in the motoring end of things - bought a house 2 years ago so its consumed alot of my time, time to give the MR2 some much needed TLC.
Shes a workhorse in fairness and other than keeping on top of oil changes Ive had to doo feck all with her since. Valve cover has been leaking a few months now
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
Sparkplug 4 was pretty bad - i've been keeping an eye on them the last few months but used my car more in the past week then the rest of the year so expected it to be as bad
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
Sparkplug 1 leaking as well but not to same extreme
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
Massive amount of stuff has to come out to get to the cam cover - ACIS and Throttle Body need seperation
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
Might help when putting the jigsaw backtogether!
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
ACIS out
Cam cover was filthy, someething thats always annoyed me, I comtemplated painting it but I'm not too bothered on how the engine is dressed so I cleaned it up with some brake cleaner
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
Everything looking healthy, the screws were very loose so I suspect the actually seal hadnt failed
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
All out - relatively straight forward following the docs - only step missing is the EGR step which was self explanatory
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
Dont you just love it when the glove rips :(
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
Parts required
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
Revision 5 gasket (other revisions can be slightly different) is cheaper from MrT than a blueprint copy! €27 all in the old one lasted 15 years so I'm quids in
11213-88460
11214-88460
Toyota recoomend "seal packer" the actually proper stuff in Toyota costs €70 - its recommend you dont use RTV
The Dirko Eiring 036.161 is an OE equivelant of the Toyota FPG packing
22271-88461
Throttle body gasket - worth change this while its out €1.50 from MrT
Looking a lot cleaner now!
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
on a side note is this the usual positioning for a timing belt?
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
While its out may as well change the airfilter (less than 15k on it and nearly 3 years old)
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
Things were going smoothley, too smoothely, was bolting on the ACIS cover and looked at the wrong step in the EG - instead of 8.5nm I thought it was 18nm and sure enough I shear one of them off - luckily enough I was able to remove it with an extractor easily enough
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
I ordered 6 new ones as I feel I probably compromised the other ones over torqing them - unfortunately I'm on the bicycle til Monday as MrT has none in stock
Part no for reference is 91511-40620 about a euro each from MrT ;)
As it stands -

CHeers lads
Changed the ACIS head bolts due to the untorqueing plesantness!
P/N 90511-B0620 6 of them at around a euro each
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
All torqued to 8.5nm this time :D
All back together
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
Working grand since
Decided to do the oil today a fresh change - somehow the dipstick feckin broke 3 inches from the top - cursed at the moment! Will tackle that tomorrow- gluteny for punishment :(
_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG
A side note anyone with an MR2 mk2 knows how this hanger joins up with the mount - assume its a bolt of some guise theres currently nothing joining the 2 - its just not clear from the EPC

That should be a long pin going into the rubber exhaust mount, your must have broken off.
Kc'd for the progress and dedication.

Cheers - take a look at the below diagram thats what threw me off - nothing attached the bracket on the down pipe
Reckon its 90105-12173 - a standard issue bolt?

See the number 1 on part # 17410, to the right of that is the pin I am talking about. I still reckon that's whats missing from your car. I will have a gander under line and take a picture tomorrow.

How are the diagrams showing ? I thought Toyota didn't allow them to be shown any more.

Fair play thanks Ray, looks like its apart of the assembly or am I looking at it wrong?
Looks like I * can * slide a bolt through but the other side has a piece of rubber at other end so throwing me off abit, they are definitely joined in some way, pics etc would help
Cheers, gent as always
