Car splutters and cuts out 7 Years, 6 Months ago Karma: 1
I have a 2002 MK3, my problem is that after start up the car splutters and cuts out if you do not rev it a bit, when you try driving it you have to keep the rev’s high and even then it can kangaroo a bit.

The sparks have been changed I replaced one of the coils, I had a friend do a compression test and all the cylinders are good, would anyone have come across an issue like this or have any idea what the issue could be?

Thanks.

Ps. I got the engine rebuilt last year.

Hi, sorry to hear of the issues. I don't have a lot of experience on the MK3 cars unfortunately. It could possibly be an engine temp sensor, but really needs to be looked at by someone who can diagnose and troubleshoot the faults.

If you are anywhere near Dublin, I can recommend Clondalkin Auto Clinic - their head mechanic Terry did a lot of work on my MR2 a couple of years back, let them know that the MR2 club sent you if you call.

Have you tried cleaning the MAF sensor on the air intake.

You need to take it out and spray electrical contact cleaner on it. Then install it again and see what happens. The MAF's are sensitive on the MRK3.

Let us know of that helps.

Sorry for the delay in replying just back from Holidays...

Quandry, I'm in North County Dublin, I don't think the car would make it all the way to Clondalkin

I will check out the Temperature Sensor though!

slipsliderg, I'll also have a look at the MAF, I already took it off, it looked clean but I never actually cleaned it, maybe a quick spary may sort it.

Thanks!!

Great stuff! I think fuel filter is often overlooked but a reasonably cheap item to replace.
