Which engine is this? 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 2
Hi lads, i'm looking at a car and am suspect over the engine in it - is this a low power 3s-Fe or 170hp 3s-ge?

It looks like the 3S-GE to me, is that Claires car, she used to be active on the site a couple of years ago.

This is the 3S-FE engine, came in the early MR2's and celicas.

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

Also the timing belt cover should have 3S-GE embossed on it in white writing on the one you posted.

It's not as it happens, that is a pic I pulled off the web.

I'm thinking of looking at this - anyone know the car?

cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2961346

I wasn't 100% sure if it was the 3s-Ge due to it being pre-94 but am I right in saying that all jap imports should have the 3S-Ge?

The 2 later engines in the JDM MR2 are the 3SGE (an NA) and the 3SGTE (turbo).

Here is more info on the different markets...

Thanks guys

I read the Wiki page before alright but I don't trust them 100%, hence the question are all JDM Mk2 n/a MR2's 3SGE's (except beams)?

I don't think all imports are 3S-GE engined, powerwise the 3SGE give:

Rev I ??? bhp

Rev II are 154 bhp

Rev III 173 bhp

Rev 4+ are 168 bhp

Edit: I think at this stage you would be hard pushed to find an MR2 with the FE engine in it, I could be wrong though but they are visually completly different engines.

Yes all later JDM MR2's that were NA were fitted with the 3SGE like the one you first posted. The only other NA engine offered from the factory was the Beams one that you already mentioned.

Not sure but if u drive it and push it to its limit the 3sge will hit 7250rpm! and u will feel peak torque come after 4k, 3sfe has abit low down torque but its all over by 5500rpm. Really only way to no def looks like a rev1/2 3sge in the photo 156bhp.

The engines will look pretty much the same, you can tell what revision the car is by other things like the spoiler and tail lights and chasis no etc.

Eh I don't think so - that's a 92 car, so it's Rev 2.

Edit - is this a Rev 3 3s-Ge?

The engines of all the 3sge will look pretty much the same man, there were a few minor things that were changed in increase power in the later revisions.
I will get you some info now on how to tell the difference in the revs.

Here is a list of the chasis no's.
www.mr2oc.co.uk/know-your-2-knowledge-ba...tid=7&kbartid=98

Rev 1-2 Rear (note the spoiler and rear lights)

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

Rev 3-4 Rear (now see the difference in spoiler and rear lights)

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

Rev 5 Rear (same tail lights as rev 3 and 4, different spoiler)

_KUNENA_BBCODE_HIDEIMG

You should check not only the differences in bodywork but also the chasis number as some people chop and change these things to their own tastes or sometimes to disguise the real age of a car, this is just a general guide.

Ok guys, went to look at a Rev 3 tonight, it was a 95 Uk car, so it should have the 3S-GE and from examining the cam cover I could see a Yamaha sticker. However, it looked like this motor - admin.rpmgarage.com/resize.php?pic=attac...epb.jpg&size=640

Different to 3S-Ge in the opening post.

I'm properly confused now - was their a difference between JDM and European Rev 3 3S-GE's?

Perhaps those of you with JDM / Uk Rev 3's might confirm which of these pics match their engines.

Yeah thats a 3SGE alright..on the Yamaha end of things, they are all BEAMS if they are badged with Yamaha (correct me if I'm wrong)

Here's a pic of mine from a Rev5 (UK) [dynoed at 160]:

^ I can live with that Out of curiousity why did the engine Kingers viewed have a Yamaha logo (not a red top).

I know the 3SGE was a combined effort between Toyota and Yamaha, I didn't know that non beams were badged with Yamaha?

Most of the performance heads on Toyota cars were developed and built (AFAIK) by Yamaha, long history of development between them.

Its the same engine dude. Your more recent pic is just a tidier and cleaner example.

Take a look at the how two section onhere at the thread on how to spot differences properly. VIN is the best way but bear in mind engines can be changed.

Good luck with your purchase
