Some Mk2's were shipped with a premium sound system option that had a sub/amp combo back there. Maybe that was the plug for the amp - can you post up a pic?

Yep, I have one in a 95 G limited. Just thought it was for a CD changer, because there was 4 screw marks where someone had something mounted behind the pasenger seat. It sound more logical that it belongs to an amp that came with some models.

Hi!

It's for the sub woofer box.

The sub-amp is located under the small side speaker at the passenger side.

Cheers!

I'm afraid I don't know their original wattage.
When I bought my 2, I had no sub box either, only it's amplifier.

I bought a sub-box from ebay and put an aftermarket sub-woofer (I think it's 120/250W) in it and I'm using a Twister amp which nicely fit under the passenger seat. I source it with line input from my pioneer head unit.

If you want to use your OEM amp, it's impedance is more important than it's wattage.
Put a 120+W speaker with the appropriate impedance and I think it should be ok.
I really don't think original amp can give out more the 60W

Cheers!

So, which method you go for?
How many cables are hanging around there you mentioned at the first post?
