TOPIC: Timing Belt

The last belt change on my MR2 was early '07 so it looks like the time has come to get it done. I'm just wondering if there is such thing as a 'typical price' for a timing belt change on an MR2? So far I've been quoted 400 euro incl water pump...

Was the €400 quoted at a Toyota dealer ?

It is a pain to do and that is partly why it cost a lot on a MR2.

You should seriously consider changing the timing belt tensioner and both pulleys while the timing belt is off.

I would think its highly unlikely to get it done for less than €400. Is that supply and fit?

€400 is a very good price, ask him to have a look at it to make sure it does need changing

Change the alternator belt while you are at it..it adds a tenner to the price and has to come out anyway.

Does that price include the idle tensioner, cambelt tensioner and the Hydraulic Cambelt Tensioner

Reason I ask is the Hydraulic one didn't come with the kit I got and it cost 60yoyos from Toyota..not sure if it needs to be done at every change.

€400 is not a bad price, if everything is included.
My mechanic is not a Toyota specialist or anything, but he didn't have too much bother doing the timing belt, wasn't engine out that's for sure, i think he might have dropped one of the mounts to make it easier for him.

There pretty pricey: ie. £79 for Hyradulic Tensioner

€58 direct from Toyota.

I was quoted €700,for a Turbo from a toyota dealer, and was advised it would be the minimum. It did my owm on a G limited, it took me 11 hours, 6 hours on the second belt. I encountered a few problems. I also did the turbo, it took 13 hours.

Toyota reccommend you change the idler pulleys every second belt change. I change mine every time, I don't think its worth the risk.

Thanks for all the replies. I've decided to go for it, seen as I've decided to keep my MR2 for another year at least (I was thinking of selling it for a while). Getting it done this weekend for 400 euro's all inclusive.

I do a lot of driving and know the feeling of being stranded after a t-belt snap on another car a few years ago, not a feeling I want to experience again!

Thanks again.

Good man better safe then sorry ..I presume you are getting the Water Pump done as well?

What condition is your coolant in..I got my mechanic to flush the coolant (and change themostat - preventative measures) when I was getting the TB done. Its a once every 4 years or so job..Get the Toyota 4Life red stuff if you're doing it
